It was Friday night and the first night of Prog XIII, for what seemed to be the least troubled of the recent HRH promotions. Anyone who keeps even half an eye on social media will know the controversy and travails with which the franchise has been beset over the past few months months, with numerous allegations about fake bookings, false advertising and unpaid appearance fees being flung in the direction of the HRH management. It’s a debate in which we at ÜRHQ have chosen not to participate, as there are always three sides to every story and anything we print would be based on third party commentary. But, it has to be admitted that most, if not all, of these allegations have gone unanswered by the accused party, who have soldiered on defiantly, as this weekend proves. And so, we hand over to our colleague Bona to comment on what actually happened over the weekend…

Hailing from Germany, The Picturebooks are a motorcycle mending, chopper and skateboard-riding, blues-rock duo, creating dirt tracks across the globe in the biker and rock n roll scene.
This garage blues band consists of Fynn Claus Grabke (in charge of vocals and guitar) and Philipp Mirtschink (on drums), who met in the local skatepark in their hometown of Gütersloh and realised they shared the same daredevil skating mind-set and more – they’ve hung out pretty much every day since.
Beach Riot/Jack’s Plan/Sweethearts/Desenser – Sheffield, Record Junkee – 7 December 2021
It was a wet and bitterly cold Tuesday night and Bona arrived at Record Junkee to watch Beach Riot and their support bands. It is the first time that been there for a gig and has to say it is a nice little venue of 150 capacity with a decent sound system. The staff are friendly and helpful too, which always helps…

Arriving at Sheffield’s iconic, and sold out, Leadmill, you couldn’t help but notice the wide range of audience members that would be attending the Hands Off Gretel gig that night in the fast growing queue. The old and the young, the misfits and the outcasts, the passionate alternative music lovers and young bands such as Blood-Stained Reputation; all eagerly awaiting the doors as they shared the excitement of seeing the band that brought them together.

With only one stage this year, it’s time for HRH Prog. There are some limitations to the bill, due to bands being unavailable due to Covid. But there are still 14 bands to fill the line-up over the two days. On top of that HRH are putting on another Prog show in London at the same time, the line-ups swapping venues, i.e., the bands playing Sheffield on the Saturday play London on the Sunday: that must be a logistical nightmare. Just as well they only have the one stage to organise in the O2 in Sheffield. Covid restrictions are in place again, a Covid passport or proof of double inoculation is needed to gain entry, though masks are optional. It is a mainly seated venue this time. And so, without further ado, let’s get started on this fine Saturday afternoon with the first band

It really doesn’t seem like two minutes have passed since last year, but 12 months on our Steel City correspondent found himself sitting in the O2 Academy for probably one of his favourite events, HRH Vikings. It looked like a very strong line up. But, did it live up to expectations? Let’s check in on the first day and find out…

A coach across for the long round trip from Liverpool to Sheffield was in store for our resident gigaholic as he ventures out into freezing temperatures in only my usual patch shirt and band shirt to keep warm. The prize is the opening night of Tantric’s European tour and on guitarist Sebastian’s birthday no less, so Hugo tells us, with a few bands in support, including previous Singles Club feature choice Attic Theory. A good night of alt-rock and grunge should be just reward for the trip.
