Frank Turner/The Lottery Winners/Wilswood Buoys – Lancaster, Kanteena – 28 January 2023.
In an attempt to cure a case of the January blues Jonny B made his way on the relatively short hop to Lancaster, which we appreciate is not exactly renowned for its wild gig scene. Yet our man found himself heading through to a venue that he’d not yet visited which is hidden away behind the Lancaster Theatre – Kanteena. Before he actually talk about the gig and the artist with a 2022 ÜK Number One album (and one of his top five of the year), can he just take a minute to talk about the venue?

For what is perhaps a first for Jonny B during his time at Über Rock, he found himself heading down to Manchester to see an artist who recently held the number one slot in the ÜK album charts – Frank Turner And The Sleeping Souls. JB has always found that Turner appeals to a real variety of fans due to his blend of folk music and punk tendencies over his 17-year solo career, and the lineup for this show really does reflect that. We’ve got Mash P – a young hip hop artist from Sierra Leone who has managed to get a scholarship in the ÜK (with a little help from Turner), Truckstop Honeymoon, a folk/country duo, and Pet Needs – who had their recent album ‘Primetime Entertainment’ produced by Turner and which will appeal to those who are more punk inclined. Turner is a man who is absolutely passionate about music and touring, so it’s no real surprise that he was using this tour to showcase these up and coming artists and friends.

The summer hasn’t quite left us yet, Jonny B mused, as he made his way down to Hatfield in glorious sunshine for one of the last events of the summer season, Slam Dunk Festival. Although JB has pretty extensively covered the festival circuit over the years, it was his first time at Slam Dunk so he was pretty excited to get down there and see what the hype was all about. Having meticulously studied the lineup in the run up to the event, he knew he was going to be in trouble as this year was clash central with several of the bands he wanted to see overlapping each other. So he was going to have to face the question of should he stay or should he go at several points throughout the day. But regardless, he set off through those gates with the sun blaring overhead to get his fix of punk, ska and heavy shit…
Read MoreTHAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2020 “COVERED”
We’re not normally fans of cover versions here at ÜRHQ, but it has to be admitted that 2020 has seem a plethora of them – perhaps a hefty percentage more than in any “normal” rock ‘n’ roll year – as artists have adapted to the various global lockdowns and used modern technology to either present their takes on favourite songs or collaborate (virtually) with like-minded fellow artists to put new twists on perennial favourites.

Read MoreNOFX vs Frank Turner – ‘West Coast vs Wessex’ (Fat Wreck Chords)
NOFX have been up there with Jonny B’s favourite bands for years, with their short snappy songs and super relatable songs about generally just being a fucked-up waster, it was a soundtrack to his teens. Finding out they had some new tunes coming out got him all excited to get back into that frame of his mind, but it turns out this isn’t just another NOFX release. Instead this is a collaboration with Frank Turner, who isn’t the dude who has a band called The Rattlesnakes (he can’t be the only one to make that mistake, right?), where they cover each other’s songs and put their own unique twist on them…
