Evil Scarecrow/Novacrow – Liverpool, O2 Academy 2 – 7 November 2024
A local gig as respite from repeated trips over to Manchester saw DJ Astrocreep catch Evil Scarecrow live for the first time in a number of years. With a support session from local stalwarts Novacrow, it’s a two band bill of acts the big lad has seen on a number of occasions before, giving plenty of opportunity to contrast and compare performances…

Bloodstock. What can we say? It’s an event that holds a very special place in our hearts and is one of our most anticipated events of every year. However, this year was accompanied by that bastard shadow of Covid that has been looming over for the best part of two years now. This meant we had unfortunate last minute line-up changes to deal with and the crew had a whole host of other challenges to deal with but, nevertheless, the show must go on… and it most certainly did – as Jonny B now recalls…
Read MoreFESTIVAL NEWS: EVIL SCARECROW TO RE-AWAKEN FOR BLOODSTOCK HEADLINE APPEARANCE
While several summer festivals have been forced to once again reschedule until next summer, and others are looking set to follow, Bloodstock has issued a defiant statement of intent to bring live metal back to the masses (sic) with the announcement that Evil Scarecrow will round out this year’s event with a Sunday night headline slot on the event’s Sophie Stage…

As I said, we’ve a bumper crop, so let’s dive right in, shall we?

The ÜR team headed to Birmingham, the home of metal, on the weekend after the 50th anniversary of Black Sabbath’s debut album for a weekend of metal goodness at HRH Metal. While the big lad took care of the interviews, it was left to Jonny B to cover the stages for the next couple of days. With three stages to cover and lots of competing slots, he did his best to catch as many of the bands as possible – and he didn’t do a bad job! So with things kicking off at 1pm on the first day, it was time for JB to make his way down to the third stage to check out the first band…

With Sabaton’s rallying warcries still getting the blood pumping come Saturday morning, we’re undertaking some roaring of our own on Saturday morning, courtesy of the standstill traffic on the M6. Arriving far too late to catch Cancer Bats’ set (though we do catch the anthemic final notes of their ‘War Pigs’ cover), we head into Catton Hall for our first band of the day. Swallow The Sun possess an incredible melodic take on doom/death, which while on paper doesn’t seem like the best way to get the day started, in practice is a grand way to kick things off. Measured and restrained, the band’s set is a total change of pace from the previous evening’s lunacy, all majestic doom melodies and crushing heaviness – just the way we like it.

In metal, you adapt, or you die. The genre has evolved continually since the first howling notes of ‘Black Sabbath’ wailed into the world (and if we’re honest, long before that too) and so with it the scene has had to grow ever more adventurous and expansive. Naturally that means that its festivals too must grow and evolve – so Bloodstock’s move to book Parkway Drive feels both entirely natural and like an enormous gamble on their part. But then, if you don’t play, you don’t win.

An industrial estate in the Southampton docks isn’t normally the place you’d find people milling around on a cold January night. The temperature is low enough to freeze the heritage off the hound but even so, a decent number of people have gathered at the Engine Rooms for a few hours of good time party metal. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy going and by the time the final notes ring out just before eleven, there are beaming faces everywhere. Evil Scarecrow might not be the coolest band in the world but for one chilly winter evening, they brought the songs and the laughs in equal measure.
