Stood in the increasingly fertile grounds between modern stoner/doom crossover and ‘70s rock revival, Black Lung’s ‘Ancients’ is the exact kind of record that retro-lovers pine for right now. Produced by Frank Marchand, the record retains the kind of fuzzy imperfect quality that classic rock releases utilised to great effect, meeting this head on with massive, earth-moving riffs and cosmic vocalisations. Cast your mind back a couple of decades, to before stoner rock became an overly macho contest to see who could play the same damn riff the longest, and the first major wave of stoner was built upon such ardent rock n roll worship… And it was good.

Our very own Mistress Of The Moonlight took herself off to Birmingham the other weekend for the Sunday of HRH Metal, where metalheads from across Europe and beyond had congregated for this marvellous event. With the line-up looking solid with a vast array of bands, she donned her denim cut off and set off to explore this festival. Despite visiting many other HRH events across the UK, this was her first time at HRH Metal, and she can gladly say she was not disappointed in her findings.

This show brought together two of Jim Rowland’s things in rock – Blue Öyster Cult and the Hammersmith Odeon. Sure it’s called the Eventim Apollo at the moment, and has had a few different names in between, but to JR and many others it will always be that magical name of the Hammersmith Odeon. In fact, it was at this very venue that our man first saw Blue Öyster Cult, back in the ‘80s on their ‘Revolution By Night’ tour. They played there a few times after that, but it must be a very long time indeed since they’ve headlined this venue, so it’s a welcome return tonight, and a clear sign that after all these years the BÖC’s popularity is on the up yet again.
