VIDEO OF THE WEEK – MALEVOLENCE
#ItItsAllTheSameToYou we’re preparing to venture to the place #WhereOnlyTheTruthIsSpoken as the steel-eyed Sheffield hardcore heavyweights take things to the next level with the first taste of their new album, accompanied by their most ambitious video yet, featuring a cameo appearance from Alan Ford, who most famously appeared as Brick Top in Guy Ritchie’s classic British gangster film ‘Snatch’.

November has been stacked for shows, like truly stacked and tonight’s show in Utrecht, the second night in this venue, While She Sleeps are smashing their way through Europe. To add incredible weight to this tour is fellow Sheffield natives, Malevolence, Swedish hardcore adjacent heavyweights, thrown, and finally French synthy metalcore outfit, Resolve. Who the fuck says Netherlands doesn’t get good metal tours? Jase W has got a year of staggering shows under his belt so far in 2024 that begs to differ…

The very fact that this debut album from newcomers Rough Justice is released on the label owned and curated by fellow Sheffield hardcore heavyweights Malevolence should speak volumes in itself about what to expect within its grooves. And, indeed, your faith in those expectations would not be in vain (sic) as it more than lives up to the anticipated level of fulfilment which this collection necessarily brings, as Monk elaborates…
Read MoreVIDEO OF THE WEEK – DESOLATED
Our first #VOTW of 2024 sees us getting the new year off to a suitably abrasive, hard-hitting and obnoxiously uncompromising start as we fall ‘Victim’ to the aural and visual assault of south coast hardcore champions Desolated, who are calling out the soul-suckers and energy vampires with the first single off their new album, which is due to be released later this year via MLVLTD Music, the label owned by Malevolence (whose drummer, Charlie Thorpe, also fulfills the same duties in Desolated)…

Slam Dunk Festival is less than a week today, so Jonny B felt it was the perfect time to sit down and run through his personal recommendations of who to see (other than himself of course) at the event and give a general rundown of what to expect from the party that is Slam Dunk.

If you’re thinking of heading to one of next month’s Slam Dunk events then you better make up your mind pronto, because the Hatfield Park event on Saturday 27 May has officially sold out, and the organizers have issued a low ticket warning for the following day’s shebang up north in Leeds.

Another freezing cold day in Manchester saw Jase W travelling across the city to Victoria Warehouse for a night of some legitimately heavy shit. Trivium, Heaven Shall Burn and Malevolence all in one show? Terrifying.

Florida groove metallers Trivium kicked off their ‘Dead Men And Dragons’ European tour run with back-to-back shows at Dublin University’s The Helix, before heading north to Belfast for the first of their ÜK dates with a triumphant return to the city’s historic Ulster Hall. They brought along Sheffield monsters Malevolence – winners of ÜR’s 2022 ‘Album Of The Year’ poll – for the ride, which resulted in possibly the biggest circle pit generated in the venue’s 200-year old history. We were there to record the onstage action:

Arriving on time and getting in nice and quickly was actually a surprising treat as it meant that Jase W didn’t have to miss today’s opening act – Year Of The Knife. The weekend’s main event had now started in earnest and people weren’t waiting around to start stage diving. The main stage here is massive and the crowd area stretched back immensely far, Outbreak hadn’t settled for half measures here clearly.

Honestly, Jase W woke up on the second day of Download with a bit of a thick head and a dry mouth, but it wasn’t going to stop him getting to the Dogtooth stage bright and early to catch his first picked band of the day…
Read MoreMalevolence – ‘Malicious Intent’ (Nuclear Blast)
If ever an album lives up to its title, then it is this, what could have been the notoriously difficult third album from Sheffield hardcore heroes Malevolence, as its intent is definitely, and defiantly, to deliver an aural beatdown that is done so maliciously and uncompromisingly. And, it has to be said, the quintet live up to their declaration, in every department, as this is one of the most declarative and emphatic generic albums you will hear this or any other year.
