CJ Ramone – ‘The Holy Spell…’ (Fat Wreck Chords)

In the history of power pop, pop punk or just plain punk, whichever term you care to apply, there can only be one name that is synonymous with the evolution of the genre, and one which quite probably has been checked more often than any other in these hallowed pages – and that is, of course, Ramone. Of course, more than two decades after the band called it quits, all four of the original “bruvas” subsequently have shuffled off this mortal coil, leaving it to their second generation “cousins” to keep the name alive – which is just what the man born Christopher Joseph Ward, the longest serving of the band members and therefore perhaps most deserving of the right to retain his adopted monicker, seeks to do on this, his fifth solo album.

It truly was a sight to gladden the heart of every true red-blooded metallian and even make it skip a beat. A truly wonderous spectacle – four towering Marshall stacks, two on each side of a crystal-clear double bass Pearl drumkit.  There can be no more beautiful vista on this planet. And it was this vision that greeted us when, having successful battled through the crowds of spides kicking off their Bank Holiday drinking sprees, we climbed the stairs into one of our favourite haunts. Yes, Asomvel were in town for their first ever visit to Belfast.

Pectora – ‘Untaken’ (Mighty Music)

Since their formation in 2013, Danish five-piece Pectora have been producing a hard hitting brand of heavy metal. ‘Untaken’ represents the band’s debut album following two previous ep releases, 2014’s ‘Burgeon of Hate’ and ‘Redemption’ in 2017. They’re looking to bring their brand of metal to a wider audience with an upcoming tour in support of the new record.
