VIDEO OF THE WEEK – FISH

Despite the ongoing lockdown in many parts of the Überverse, we are still receiving a healthy bundle of submissions for our coveted ‘Video Of The Week’ title. Many of them are produced against the background of continuing quarantine conditions in some countries, while others reflect artists being able to return and flex their creative muscles once again. We have only one video for you this week, and the reason will be very obvious. It comes from prog rock legend Fish and the haunting, poignant and reflective video for the powerful and highly emotional ‘Garden Of Remembrance’, the second single to be lifted from the singer’s forthcoming final solo album, ‘Weltschmerz’ which will be released on 25 September.

The BIG Über Rock Interview – Johannes Eckerstrom (Avatar)

Theatrical goth rockers Avatar release their new album, ‘Hunter Gatherer’, on 7 August. So, the big lad by the name of Astrocreep took the opportunity to catch up with charismatic frontman Johannes Eckerstrom about the album: mind you, it took two attempts to get the conversation on tape, thanks to the beauties/vagaries of Microsoft updates launching themselves during the uploading process. However, with the interview successfully saved at the second attempt, among the topics we discussed, at length, were how a track on it has been seven years in the making, as well as being his biggest challenge to date, his thoughts on the heaviest song ever and a rider request that maybe worried some venues about what they were getting with the band!

Exocrine – ‘Maelstrom’ (Unique Leader)

Jonni D reckons that French tech-death metallers Exocrine are savvy enough to know that there’s more to standing out in their genre than dizzying masturbatory displays. Of course, there are plenty of virtuosic feats of prog metal madness on their fourth full-length, ‘Maelstrom’; but there’s a nuanced approach to Exocrine’s songwriting that superbly balances the savage aspects of their music with bursts of cathartic grandiosity.  Folks that related to the accessibility of recent releases from Cattle Decapitation and Rivers of Nihil will likely find this record to be an equally satisfying listen.

Christwvrks – ‘Messiah Complex’ (Apocalyptic Witchcraft)

“The Band Is Dead! And with it the idea that an extreme music act has to have a typical structure is subsequently also dead.” That is the basic assumption expounded by the enigmatic Jamie Christ, the blackwork tattoo artist behind this self-styled “introspective death industrial multimedia project”. And, in a way, he is right as, given the capabilities of modern technology, and as has been proven on multiple occasions, it is possible for just one person to create a sound, a feeling, an atmosphere, that previously would have required an entire group of individuals to evoke and produce, with that person drawing on the resources and skills of other likened minds only as and when required, or relevant to the project concerned.

Blackballed – ‘Elephant In The Room’ (Metalville)

Blackballed were formed in 2012 by New Model Army guitarist Marshall Gill and to date have released an EP and a brace of albums. However, the path to the release of this, their third album, which was due to be laid down last year, was hit by one of those immoveable objects which invariably place themselves in the career trajectory of the majority of rock ‘n’ roll bands, when Gill’s brother Leon surprisingly quit the drum stool.  However, as is also the case in such sagas, the frontman and erstwhile sidekick Tom Wibberley have dusted themselves down, recruited a new drummer (Alex Whitehead) and finally got around to proving if, indeed, the third time is actually a charm…
