Jinjer – ‘Alive in Melbourne’ (Napalm Records)

Let’s face it, 2020 has been just a little bit shit with everyone having their lives severely disrupted, especially within the music industry. One of the bands that must be really feeling robbed by the whole situation is Jinjer for whom 2019 was a massive year where their hype train was gaining some serious momentum on the back of their latest album ‘Macro’. This resulted in many people (including our Jonny B) making a note to check them out on their next ÜK tour but then everything went tits up and we’ll all have to wait a bit longer to be able to catch Jinjer on stage. In the meantime, we have this live album to (potentially) slake our thirsts…

Helena Aleksandre – ‘Angels Don’t Sleep’ (Sliptrick)

Whatever expectations you have in your head for this, it is probably not what you think. ‘Angels Don’t Sleep’ has most of the elements that John B loves and really look for in an album. There are some folk elements. There is some experimentation with other sounds and effects. They even have contrasting tones between electric and acoustic guitars. It is almost like this album was written in many ways to cater directly to my tastes but with all that being said JB found himself a little bored at times. That is not to say that he disliked the album by any means – just that there is something missing….

Looking back on the history of rock ’n’ roll, there aren’t many bands more infamous, legendary and influential than The Stooges, even if they didn’t get the recognition, or record sales, they deserved at the time. This new box set from Cherry Red documents the final year of the band’s existence, in its second incarnation, through five live recordings, all of which have been released at various points in time before, but gathered together here for the first time in one very neat little box.
