Curse the Son – ‘Excruciation’ (Ripple Music)

The world has shifted for US doom metallers Curse The Son. They’ve not had it easy since the release of last album ‘Isolator’ in early 2017. Drummer Michael Petrucci left the band and in late 2018 bassist Brendan Keefe was involved in a serious motorcycle accident. There’s nothing like a near death experience to invite perspective on the world. Through his long recovery, Ron Vanicore (vocals/guitar) and new drummer Robert Ives worked with him through the pain and devastation, building their relationship and using their shared experiences to fuel creation. In the new dynamic, Keefe contributes heavily and as a band they collectively broaden their horizons and darken the feel of their music to reflect their altered consciousness. Curse the Son is now inevitably more cognisant of how dark things can get but also of what it takes to move towards the light.

Deified – ‘Anthrobscene’ (Self-Released)

Deified first came to the attention of the wider Überverse when they stormed to victory in the Merseyside leg of 2015’s ‘Metal 2 The Masses’ competition for a slot at the annual Bloodstock festival. The win coincided, more or less, with the release of their highly impressive debut album, ‘Ascension’. They followed this, two years later, with the defiant and impactful EP, ‘Inhuman Manifesto’, which threatened to help them build an unstoppable momentum and propel them into the upper echelons of the ÜK metal scene. However, that momentum slowed somewhat and it has taken them three years to once again declare their intention to dominate and subjugate their rivals with this latest collection.

War After War – ‘No Change’ EP (APF Records)

War After War is an amalgam of Manchester label APF’s talent comprising the rhythm section of Bongcauldron, Ben ‘Corky’ Corkhill (vocals/bass) and Jay Hope on drums as well as Lewis Atkinson (Nomad) on guitar.  Bongcauldron went out on a high on the Bloodstock stage but subsequently decided to take an indeterminate break. However, Jay and Lewis got talking and War After War rose from the ashes. Just as well, as it sounds like the cans were about to be hawked on EBay or some other, clearly less well known, auction site.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK – MUSHROOMHEAD

Despite the ongoing lockdown in many parts of the Überverse, we are still receiving a healthy bundle of submissions for our coveted ‘Video Of The Week’ title. While some artists are trying to find new ways of visually interpreting their songs, others obviously have had the guts of their filming completed in advance of the global quarantine, with the finishing touches being added in isolated post-production. However, as lockdown starts to ease in some territories, we are starting to notice the return of more “traditional”-style music videos…

Calling All Astronauts – ‘#Resist’ (Self-Released)

We must admit, we get sent some complete and utter shite here at ÜRHQ. Some of it is so shite that it clogs the toilet as we try to flush it down the drain, never to be seen or heard again, never again to pollute our sensitive rock ‘n’ roll ears… And this monumental memorial to excrement is down there at the bottom of the shit-stained pile that we’ve had to employ the industrial drain cleaner to remove from our environs.
