Chosen by Monk

The Uber Rock Approved stampWe may be just a month into the new rock ‘n’ roll year, but we’ve already had a surprising number of videos already come our way – almost 100 of them in the past week alone – vying for the coveted title and virtual gong of being named our favourite… not the best, we stress, but our favourite…

Believe me, we do watch all of the submissions, and a lot of them are of an extremely high quality, but there can only ever be one winner… And, to that end, this week’s selection stood head and shoulders above the rest of the competition and is the most powerful and hypnotic offering to have come our way so far in 2022. It comes from mysterious post-rock duo Nordic Giants, an act who have always been renowned for their integration of audio and visuals, both on screen and in their massive live performances (which we’ll be able to see next month).

‘Faceless’ is the first single from the band’s forthcoming new album, ‘Symbiosis’, released this coming week. It features a powerful guest lead vocal from folk singer Alex Hedley, while the video features and elegiac and eloquent performance from Simon Brice, who dominates every aspect of the dark and immersive clip.

Giants’ Rôka and Löki told us a bit more about the video:

“[It] touches upon the symbology surrounding the mythical ouroboros symbol – or snake swallowing its own tail.  It’s an allegory for the trappings of life, where every soul is accountable for their own path, but often chooses to remain in the comforts of ignorance or self-sabotage.

“It’s a little dark, but it’s also quite funny!  A huge thank you to our good friend Simon, who literally got dragged through hell and back whilst filming”

In relation to the album itself, the band told us that it represents the interdependent relationship of all life. The union and blending of polar opposites, the harmony created when two different elements combine, not just in nature or in a philosophical sense, but at the root creative level”.
