Architectural Genocide – ‘Cordyceptic Anthropomorph’ (Comatose Music)

Jonny B was under absolutely no illusions as to what he was letting himself in for when he picked up this album. Let’s face it, there was no way that a band called Architectural Genocide woould be releasing a concept album on sunshine and rainbows, that’s for sure! No, this is an absolutely gut-wrenchingly brutal piece of death metal savagery that would scare your parents and convince your grandmother that you’re sacrificing virgins in the back garden. JB feels like he’s been trampled by a stampede of armour clad elephants within minutes of starting this album which means that it’s doing everything it set out to do, and there’s a slim chance that he’s going to make it through this album without experiencing some serious injury… probably whiplash.

Crossfire/Ifreann/Sinocence/Acid Age – Belfast, Voodoo – 13 March 2020

Little could anyone involved have realized the importance of the timing of this gig, the second date on the second leg of the ‘Celtic Thrash’ tour featuring Edinburgh shredders Ifreann and their Dublin counterparts Crossfire. OK, it was Friday the 13th – but, then, that’s probably the most appropriate date possible for a metal show. But then the world was thrown into chaos with the coronavirus outbreak, and Irfeann arrived on the island of Ireland on the very day that the government south of the border decreed a ban on gatherings of 100 or more people… somehow, however, the visitors got away with bringing their party to Dublin’s fair city – although the third and final date in Cork ultimately fell victim to the new restrictions.

Heaven Shall Burn – ‘Of Truth And Sacrifice’ (Century Media)

If awards were given out for being successful in mainland Europe without ever breaking the UK, Germany’s Heaven Shall Burn would be a relatively safe bet for winning. They’ve been tearing stages apart since the late ‘90s but have yet to make more than a ripple on these shores. They’re well overdue for finding an audience here beyond the folks who venture abroad for festival season, but if there’s an album that’ll change that, ‘Of Truth And Sacrifice’ most likely won’t be it. Not because it’s bad or anything, but because it’s that which all record label sales reps fear: a double album.

Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate – ‘Nostalgia For Infinity’ (Glass Castle Recordings)

Having covered last year’s ‘Ark EP’ by the same band, Astrocreep was delighted to receive an offer of early access to Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate’s forthcoming ‘Nostalgia For Infinity’ album months before its actual release. The question was whether a full-length release would stand up to the test of a rather enjoyable EP as a predecessor, as well as a rather glorious-sounding back catalogue. Having cleared out the more immediate releases from his pile, it was time to give the album its first spin…

Vanir – ‘10 Years of Mead and Metal’ (Mighty Music)

Vanir appeared on Phil C’s radar early last year when he got the chance to review their excellent ‘Allfather’ album. It was an album that showcased the culmination of their work thus far and highlighted the Danish six-piece as a dominant metal force. It was also, for his money, the top album of 2019. They’ve now been around for a decade and since the release of ‘Allfather’ have consistently been gigging and earning new fans. In addition to this, over the years they’ve developed their sound into a heavier delivery that is now notably different from their early recordings.
