Kris Barras/Buffalo Summer – Cardiff, The Globe – 6 February 2019

With a backstory that reads like a Hollywood script (childhood player, disillusionment, bankruptcy, cage fighting and sadly the death of his father aged 54) David O’Neill went along to the first night of Kris Barras’ current UK tour wondering how good a guitarist could an ex-Mixed Martial Arts fighter be: he knew one thing – he wasn’t going to risk saying he wasn’t! There was no need for our man to worry about being put in a headlock; anyone who has played guitar from the age of six was likely to be pretty good…

Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard –‘Yn Ol I Annwn’ (New Heavy Sounds)

Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard have always been something of an ethereal beast. Existing on the outer-edges of modern doom’s experimental, drowning-in-atmosphere sonics, the band offered a sense of overwhelming emotion which threatened to drown listeners with each crashing wave. Rosy Vista – ‘Unbelievable’ (Steamhammer)

It wasn’t too long ago that Gerald S was reviewing the debut by Johnny Seven that had been decades in the making. Well, you could essentially say the same for this one as Rosy Vista from Germany unleash their debut full length after first starting in the early ‘80s. Between this and John Diva and the Rockets of Love, Gerald has to keep reminding himself that this is 2019 and not 1985, and he doesn’t see that as a bad thing. Many probably just stopped reading, but he knows there is still an audience who loves this style because he doesn’t think he is alone… The question of if he likes it though always comes down to the actual songs…

VIDEO OF THE WEEK – Chout

In a week that saw both their native Chicago gripped by some of the worst snowstorms in the city’s history and Alice In Chains announce their return to the Über Kingdom of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Chout released their new single, ‘Seasons’. The timing was appropriate on both counts: not do the Illinois quartet draw heavily on the AiC sound, but the song also addresses the issue of seasonal depression.

Brian Downey’s Alive & Dangerous – Isernhagen, Blues Garage – 3 February 2019

For those of you that do not recognise the name, Brian Downey is one of the world’s most underrated rock drummers. Along with Phil Lynott on bass, they provided the bedrock that supported the now famous twin guitar sound of Thin Lizzy. Why Brian isn’t in the Rolling Stone’s top 100 drummer’s list is beyond belief, and hard to swallow, especially for any diehard Thin Lizzy fanatic like me. Thin Lizzy was the band I grew up listening too, so this review may be a bit biased.
