Was there ever a marriage more mutually beneficial in metal than that of the symphonic and extreme metal canons? Possessing the epic grandiosity of the former and the sheer aggression and power of the latter, symphonic extreme metal is a subgenre that is truly coming into its own this decade, particularly as more bands appear to be adopting it as a tool in the creation of enormous-sounding records. Which brings us to Meadows End, a Swedish quintet who owe more to the likes of Dimmu Borgir and Amon Amarth than to the usual Nightwish/Within Temptation influences that overwhelm so many other symphonically inclined bands.

At The Sun – ‘Leave Before The Light’ (Self-Released)

It never ceases to surprise David O’Neill when bands he has seen at local small independent venues in south east Wales start to climb up the production ladder and make a name for themselves.  This has happened with the likes of Florence Black, Buffalo Summer and Those Damn Crows lately.  he doesn’t know if it’s the air or the venues, but we are very lucky to have some killer venues and promotors working in this area.  At The Sun may not be from this area but they have played at the Doll’s House, promoted by our good friends at Rock N Roll Circus and are coming back on their album release tour. So once again or man in the valleys gets the chance to review a new album of a band I have seen live.
