Dopethrone/Gurt – London, Macbeth – 4 September 2019

A long round trip to London was on the cards for our resident gigaholic, as work prevented him getting to the more local leg of the Dopethrone and Gurt tour, so it’s time to prep himself for a 600+ mile round trip and ready himself for the inevitable whiplash. He found on arrival that the first support have sadly had to pull out last minute, meaning we have just the two bands on the bill. Ah well, let the heaviness commence!

It’s Friday night at the O2 Academy in Sheffield. Hard Rock Hell are staging their Highway to Hell talent search final. The winner will be given the chance to take their careers to another level. Jonni Davis has got Amazon Prime on board and HRH are streaming live to a worldwide audience. This is the type of event the scene needs, ensuring that a steady stream of new talent are given the sort of exposure that is often denied to rock bands by the mainstream media.

Ewigkeit – ‘Starscape 2.019’ (Death To Music)

This is the first John Bedard has heard of Ewigkeit, so even though this was a re-recording and re-release of an album from 20 years ago he went into this rather blind. Before he talks about the new one, though, he wants to take a second and talk about the original, because he did go back and check it out to compare – and he really doesn’t think it is something that he could have gotten into. It was harsh and muddy, the vocals were completely lost and you could not pick out one instrument from another very easily. The bones were there but with the quality of the recording, it was hard to tell. However, he’s happy to report that the 2019 re-release has none of those issues: the quality is fantastic and really lets the music shine. It was absolutely worth it to reproduce this album. He loved every minute of it.

InAir – ‘Dreamful’ (Self-Released)

It has to be admitted that, to date, 2019 has been a great year for quality rock and metal music, especially from these here islands that make up the Über Kingdom of Rock ‘n’ Roll. OK, there has been a fair of doozies and tripe come our way over the eight months to date but, with a third of the year still to run its course, a lot of new bands have emerged whom Frank Warren for one would mark down as definite contenders should they ever step into the squared circle. And the latest to do so are Reading trio InAir with this, their affirmative second EP.
