Running Wild – ‘Crossing The Blades’ EP (Steamhammer/SPV)

Time to crack out the rum as Jonny B gets in the mood for the latest gold doubloon from the original pirate metal band, Running Wild. For those of a younger disposition, you might not realise that these guys were there long before the likes of Alestorm and Lagerstein dragged metal piracy into the limelight, a fact that Alestorm make an open nod to when they start scraping the barrel. Anyway, JB was excited to find some new music from Running Wild appear at ÜRHQ and gave it a listen to see what the guys who brought us ‘Under Jolly Roger’ have to offer this time… A quick glance suggests that we’ve got ourselves a few original tracks (hooray!) and a cover song (hmm).

Red Death – ‘Sickness Divine’ (Century Media)

Crossover thrash time! Washington-based four-piece Red Death just made the jump to a major by signing with Century Media and ‘Sickness Divine’ is their first release on the label. Custom built to satisfy mosh lovers, it’s a brisk and energetic record and will no doubt trigger a circle pit or two at a future Hellfest. They take their inspiration from the usual suspects like Slayer and the Cro-Mags and while they don’t exactly open a brave new world for thrash, for nuts and bolts metal that’ll get heads banging they don’t put a foot wrong.

Blood Red Shoes – Liverpool, Arts Club – 22 November 2019

A rare gig in his home city beckons after fate conspired to stop our resident gigaholic from catching Blood Red Shoes at their Manchester gig earlier this year, so an opportunity to catch them on home soil seemed like a terrible thing to waste. A double support act of Gen and the Degenerates and Queen Kwong mark a solid bill from one of Liverpool’s most established promoters still going.
