Horn was formed as a solo project in 2003 by Niklas and is a solitary musical undertaking up to the present day. The initial drive behind the project was to create nature-themed black metal, focusing on the relation of man and nature in a regional context. The old material, being mainly concerned with detailed descriptions of nature and incorporating rather upbeat, folk-influenced riffing, has made way for more sinister themes and soundscapes over the years. What has remained throughout the course of nine studio albums is the distinct “Horn” sound, featuring siren-like lead guitars, classical black metal-styled vocals as well as clean chorals and a serious folkloristic approach far from the jolly drunken Viking tunes celebrated these days.

His third gig this past weekend after returning from an escapade in London saw Jase W returning to Manchester and making a mad dash across town for the doors at Rebellion for tech death stalwarts Fit For An Autopsy. Monk has to admit that he has something of a love/hate relationship with the annual Metal 2 The Masses “battle of the bands”-style competition. Having been involved as a judge for the past seven years, he loves the fact that it has, in that period, introduced him to so many great new bands, and continues to open my eyes (and ears) to some incredible young (and, in some cases, not so young) talent, showing, year on year, what a massive pool of the stuff we have in this particular corner of the Überverse.

Ever since the release of Giuda’s debut album ‘Racey Roller’ back in 2010, the glam-fuelled Rome rockers have spearheaded the revival of bootboy ‘bovver rock’, making the ‘proper’ glam rock of the first half of the ‘70’s cool again. Twelve years on, they have four outstanding studio albums under their glitter belts but, so far, no live recordings. That’s about to change with the release of ‘Live At Punk Raduno’, a live album recorded in the summer of 2021 at the Italian festival Punk Rock Raduno.

Seattle punk veterans The Drowns’ last album, ‘Under Tension’ was by all accounts a ten track Trojan Horse, packed with genius punk belters that seemed destined to launch them to victory. Unfortunately, their carefully crafted creation was sabotaged by the impact of Covid-19, leaving the marketing and promotion campaign truly tarred and feathered. Yet, The Drowns have returned, determined to do things their way with a sound that is a blend of punk hooks and rock rhythm that is sure to disgust purists.
