Chosen by Monk
We’re almost two months into the current rock ‘n’ roll year, and we continue to receive a veritable tsunami of video clips – more than 120 of them in the past week alone – being sent our way in a bid to be the latest recipient of the coveted title and virtual gong of being named our favourite… not the best, we stress, but our favourite…
Believe me, we do watch all of the submissions, and, apart from those which don’t meet our criteria – i.e., no lyric videos, no straight performance clips and no “playthroughs” – most of them are of an extremely high quality, but there can only ever be one winner… And, to that end, this week’s selection is one that I returned to several times during the judging process, drawn back to it by the hypnotic nature of its simplicity.
It is the beautifully shot clip for ‘One Easy Thing, the latest single from TV Priest. The clip, filmed on 16mm black and white stock, features singer Charlie Drinkwater as a beleaguered 15th Century knight returning home from battle to find life on the domestic front has changed drastically in his absence… the result is a darkly comic and mournful solo danse macabre.
Speaking about the single, the first to be lifted from the band’s second album, due later this year via Sub Pop, Drinkwater told us:
“Writing ‘One Easy Thing’ was key to unlocking a more direct and personal approach to our songwriting. It’s about dealing with the small things of everyday life; the anxiety, pressures, and battles inside your own headspace – and not being afraid to show this in our songs.”
