Chosen by DJ Astrocreep and DJ Monk
It’s time for our ‘Video Of The Week shortlist again, with a bumper list of submission not only giving DJ Astrocreep plenty to think over but also calling in the cavalry, as he enlisted the help of chief pack mule Monk to whittle the list down to our winner and three commendations. A full evening’s worth of clicking links and viewing clips later, the duo finally made their picks…
Astrocreep’s first pick is 1000mods, possibly Greece’s biggest rock export, with ‘Pearl’, a grunge-tinged alt-rock package which has quite the well-crafted video with a story behind it – though we don’t want to spoil it by going into the story! The track is taken from their forthcoming new album, ‘Youth Of Dissent‘, which is being released on 1 May.
Those scallywag Aussie punks The Chats are back at it again… With their debut full length album, ‘High Risk Behaviour‘, due out later this month, ‘Dine N Dash’ is the fifth single to be released from same – and it’s easy to see why both of us were impressed by them when they visited the Über Kingdom last year, as it’s another highly anthemic punk shout along!
Monk can claim the credit for next choice, which comes from Sheffield alt-punks Sobriquet and their dark tale of a killing from the perspective of a victim. ‘Benighted’ is the lead single from their new EP, ‘A Hundred Thousand Tongues’, which they will be self-releasing on 1 May. The accompanying video was directed by fellow Steel City native, While She Sleeps’ bassist Aaran McKenzie:
The final of our three merit awards goes to the sublime Chelsea Wolfe, who returns to the Über Kingdom later this month for a series of four acoustic shows in support of her excellent ‘Birth Of Violence‘ album. In the meantime, she is taking us on a trip down the ‘Highway’, complete with a rather entrancing video, almost as a homage to one of her idols, Joni Mitchell, giving it a very different feel to our other selections, but one that is absolutely worth its place in our shortlist this week.
Our winner, and not for the first time, is the ever charismatic The Chats, with ‘Dine N Dash’. Damn them for making such catchy music and inanely fun videos to go with it!
