Chosen by Monk

Good morning pop pickers (well, it is morning somewhere in the Überverse), and let us start your day off with my latest choice cut, which sees our good friend Willie Dowling, a regular visitor to both these pages in general and the Singles Club in particular (that’s his private booth, the third one on the left, over there), who is confessing to killing his imaginary friend on his own latest selection from his forthcoming solo album.

I guess this is probably a song about the constant battle with the fragile alter ego of the musician, quietly nagging away about missed opportunities, or pointing out one’s weaknesses and peculiarities, the man himself told us over a glass of his favourite tipple.

Frankly, I don’t really want to think about what it might mean so much. It came out far too easily to be entirely comfortable.

Alongside Dowling’s piano, bass, vocal and production efforts, ‘I Killed My Imaginary Friend’ also features Darby Todd on drums.

The Simpleton‘ will be released at some stage over the summer.

Willie Dowling & The Invisible Band will be supporting Quireboys on four dates this week, playing Sheffield’s Corporation on Thursday (9 May), Newcastle’s Riverside on Friday (10 May), KK’s Steelmill in Wolverhampton on Saturday (11 May) and finally Swansea’s Patti Pavilion on Sunday (12 May).
