Chosen by Monk
My latest hot off the presses choices comes from a Belfast combo I first came across just a hiccough of a few short weeks ago, when I was invited to step outside of my normal musical comfort zone and check out an alternative side of my home city’s music scene.
Opening the proceedings on that particular evening, Gush impressed me with their grunge-inflected nascent neo-garage punk, which came across like “early Go-Gos or Hole fronted by Stevie Nicks”. Now, they build upon that initial sense of impression with this, the second single from their just-released reflective debut EP, ‘Exposure Therapy’.
One thing is certain: these guys are far from a #Worthless inclusion in Northern Ireland’s rich, dynamic and egregiously eclectic musical pantheon, and deserve to be heard with their declarative defiance in the face of self-doubt and inner demons – and what better way to exorcise those than through this particular medium?
- ‘Exposure Theory‘ is out now.
- Gush play the Union Bar at Queen’s University Belfast Students’ Union next Friday (28 June).
