FESTIVAL NEWS: GET READY TO FEEL THE ‘PROGPOWER’ IN OCTOBER
We are Über Rock take our prog and prog-adjacent music seriously, and after our man Jase shifted himself to the Netherlands, it has opened up the radar to all manner of festivals and events in the country itself and nearby. The latest in this is Progpower Europe in the small town of Baarlo, close to the Dutch/German border, over the first weekend on October. It’s just completed its lineup and what a doozy it is!

So, we are now in full swing with announcements and updates around the upcoming summer festival season across the ÜK and Europe – and one of the premier prog-aligned stalwarts, the Cologne-based Euroblast, has hit the ground running with its first set of bands for the end of September… and the announcement is a doozy!

If ever a band was appropriately named it is this Lebanese prog metal outfit, as their homeland has undergone nothing but turbulent times for the past five decades (or more) and has entered a new phase in recent days. This is the latest single to be taken from the quartet’s latest concept album, released this past March:

The cold weather is drawing in and Amsterdam looks gorgeous at night, but I’m not off to see the sights, tonight is a form of stargazing in the form of STARSET. This sci-fi themed proggy metal band have wowed me time and again with their live shows often featuring large screens with space exploration videos all the way to desert planet vistas and dystopian societies with a lyrical undercurrent of awe and fear of technological progress.

August was threatening to be the end of Jase W with how busy he’d been, but as the month drew to a close, it was time for him to catch some delicious proggy technical metalcore from Born Of Osiris. We’re wondering how long it will be before Patronaat considers charging our European correspondent rent for how often he’s been here this year but until then he’ll happily make the trip over to this lovely venue in Haarlem. For the headline dates on this tour they’ve got Dutch deathcore outfit Distant with them for the ride and for tonight’s local support, Gallamesh. It was going to be heavy as fuck and JW reckoned the Patronaat didn’t going to know what hit it!

This was part two of the delayed review writing from two very different but no less impressive recent gigs attended by our man in South Wales. The first time Dave O saw Nothing More was in the Motorpoint in Cardiff in 2018 when they supported BFMV. That was a very impressive performance with Jonny Hawkins “driving” the mechanized Scorpion. Whilst this is not our valley correspondent’s usual genre of music, these are one of the “alt-rock” “prog metal” bands he will try to see if they are in the South Wales area – or just across the Bristol Channel for that matter!.

Nothing like a weekend jaunt off to London for a catch up with some friends and a couple of gigs, the first of which is Godsticks at the Hope and Anchor. Admittedly this trip was spurred on by Periphery playing tomorrow at the time of writing but nothing like checking the gig lists and finding another band you’re quite a fan of on the day you fly over.

So, after a pretty rough week dealing with being ill for most of it, Jase W was back to normal and ready to get some prog in his ears in the heart of Amsterdam at Melkweg. The colder and darker days are starting to roll in but at least he wasn’t sweating histits off in baking heat while waiting for the doors to open now, so it’s got its minor perks he supposes…

It was bit of a late start to the third and final day for Jase W, thanks to some arm twisting to end up in Satan’s Hollow last night but it wouldn’t be a Manchester trip without it we suppose! But, it wasn’t long before he was diving back into the heart of the action…

For an esteemed prog metal gremlin like Jase W, he is eating well so far in 2023, and tonight was three acts that straddle the line between prog metal and jazz fusion; Plini, Jakub Zytecki, and Owane & Jack Gardiner. It’s no secret that Plini and Jakub have become steadfast friends over the years and often play support to each other on many shows with just swapping out who plays first fiddle for their particular set. Not only that but Owane & Jack Gardiner released one of our resident gigaholic’s favourite albums of last year so getting to hear that stuff live was going to be a right treat…

Continuing the trend of “March 2023 was mental”, Haken and Between The Buried And Me finally bring their rearranged tour to Manchester and after getting his teeth stuck into BTBAM’s latest, ‘Colours II’, and Haken’s latest, ‘Fauna’, Jase W couldn’t be more excited for it! Not only that but he had got Cryptodira in support whom he saw absolutely destroy Manchester Club Academy a few years back with Animals As Leaders and Car Bomb.

Another journey across the East Lancs sees DJ Astrocreep take in the delights of Dream Theater for the first time, with the prog metal masters long being a must-see band for him. An all-seated gig – becoming more and more common with a lot of the bands he likes – means plenty of opportunity to concentrate on the music, too!
