Imagine if Mick Jagger came sauntering into your local gin joint, smacked one square on your grandma’s lips and said “remember me, bitch?” Well, that is exactly the feeling evoked right from the opening crash of this slam-dunkin’ slice of bar room boogie as served up by my favourite barman, Malibu Lou, down at his Rum Bar Café (y’know the one, just off the Strip on the back road to Santa Harmonica… yeah, that’s the place…)
This bunch of glunked-down street punks kick down the doors and slam (sic) their way into a ‘Brand New Day’ with their well-honed brand of classic punk infused garage rock. You can taste the spit and smell the sweat in each and every visceral vocal and raucous riff as they strut and swagger their way nine tracks of classic glunk ‘n’f’n’ roll.
Echoing the DGAF attitude of The Ramones as much as they do the chilled out sensibilities of the likes of Squeeze and Talking Heads, combined with the cutting edge pop punk sensibility of classic Buzzcocks and the laissez-faire sonambulism of Tom Petty, these five guys certainly know how to fill your ears with infectious worms that get your feet tapping and your fingers clicking as eagerly as they have you humming along to their instantly memorable choruses. At the same time, they actually make you think about what you’re listening to, as the lyrics have a deceptively deep, sometimes mystical, thoughtfulness to them which more than likely will be missed on the first cursory listen but make this defiant little opus very much worth exploring on much deeper levels.
So, boy, whatcha waitin’ for? Don’t cut these little rawk ‘n’f,n’ troublemakers any slack but just mosey on up to thon there bar, pour your nanny a double and tell her Sir Mick sends his regards…
