Sadness & Complete Disappointment is a very fitting name for the times we’re living in. It also happens to be the name of the Midlands’ very own grunge trio. Their EP, ‘Fun’, takes a deep dive into the bleak and gloomy world that we’re all currently inhabiting. Esme (lead vocals/drums) delivers hauntingly beautiful vocals, which are prominent on every track.
The EP kicks off with ‘Monotony’, which hits differently especially during this year-long lockdown we’ve all been enduring. I was instantly drawn in by their richly textured and unique sound. ‘Oh, Rapture!’ has layers of striking harmonies courtesy of Bek/Beka (bass/vocals) and delicate guitar melodies paired with crunchy riffs via Kit (they/them) which I greatly appreciate as a guitarist myself.
‘Survivor’s Guilt’ brings the gloom with its angelic vocals and poignant lyrics. The amount of talent in this trio is honestly other worldly. This EP ends on a high note with the band’s first single release late last year, ‘Status’. Kit immediately throws down a catchy riff followed by more soaring vocals and harmonies that set this band apart from anyone else in the scene. I’m also a fan of the breakdown towards the end that had me banging my head along with it.
Sadness & Complete Disappointment gives off vibes of Sonic Youth and Smashing Pumpkins while still keeping their own sound. Don’t forget to check out their awesome music videos for ‘Status’ and ‘Monotony’. This is certainly an album to get lost in, so turn it up and enjoy!
