Thekla is probably one of the most unique grass roots music venues David O ever attends. It is an old cargo ship in the Mud Dock in Bristol. Originally bought by Viv Stanshall (of The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah band and Master of Ceremonies on Mike Oldfields Tubular Bells commentary fame)and his wife Ki. It continues to provide a great place for gigs and tours. Dave has to say the sound is superb considering its an old metal box. Unusually, you feel like the ship is rocking when you walk up and down any of the stairs.

The Liverpool Philharmonic Hall provided a grandiose setting for what was sure to be a grandiose performance from the ever talented Steve Hackett and company. With more than a little help from his sublimely talented cohort, including the likes of Nad Sylvan, Jonas Reingold and a prolonged guest spot from Amanada Lehmann, there was no need for a support act and DJ Astrcoreep thus found himself promptly getting straight on to the main action.

They say the years go faster the older you get, and this could well be true, as it seems like nothing more than a hot minute since I first came across comparative musical pubescents (well, they’re celebrating 13 years together as a band in 2024) The Cadillac Three, and I was delighted to reacquaint myself with these three fine southern chappies as they pulled into Cardiff for the penultimate night of their latest whistlestop of this ‘ere li’l ol’ Uber Kingdom…

A slightly different gig than the previous night’s psychedelia shenanigans, this evening’s jaunt across to Manchester sees the big man take in a fatal fourway of the finest death metal around in Stormruler, Ingested, Dark Funeral and Cannibal Corpse. 6pm doors is an early start but it doesn’t seem to deter what is a half full room for Stormruler, growing to a hefty 2/3 by the end of their set!

Another journey across the East Lancs sees DJ Astrocreep take in the delights of Dream Theater for the first time, with the prog metal masters long being a must-see band for him. An all-seated gig – becoming more and more common with a lot of the bands he likes – means plenty of opportunity to concentrate on the music, too!

Florida groove metallers Trivium kicked off their ‘Dead Men And Dragons’ European tour run with back-to-back shows at Dublin University’s The Helix, before heading north to Belfast for the first of their ÜK dates with a triumphant return to the city’s historic Ulster Hall. They brought along Sheffield monsters Malevolence – winners of ÜR’s 2022 ‘Album Of The Year’ poll – for the ride, which resulted in possibly the biggest circle pit generated in the venue’s 200-year old history. We were there to record the onstage action:
