Hailing from Germany’s Black Forest, metal band Finsterforst have been blending a sound of black and pagan inspired metal mixed with orchestral sweeping soundscapes since 2004. With a discography spanning seven releases back to 2007, Finsterforst have earned themselves a widespread fan base and critical acclaim for their branch of metal. Their previous release ‘#YOLO’ was taken to be a slight departure from their darker, grander sound. Rancho Bizzarro – ‘Possessed By Rancho’ (Argonauta Records)

John Bedard doesn’t know why he was so surprised that this was instrumental, but it had never crossed his mind when he was handed the EP. What we have here is a good old fashion stoner rock. It is wonderfully complex and even though it has no real lyrics, other than a couple of spoken words on track four, each song absolutely still tells you a story, as each track evolves, guiding you on an emotional journey that you won’t regret.

Sometimes there’s something that catches your eye amongst all the general noise that makes it stand out and make you take notice. This week, it was this description that really brought Jonny B’s attention to an album he hadn’t noticed before… “Strap up, crack open a beer and enjoy this soundtrack to binge drinkin’, bar room brawls, and hangovers”. Having partaken in much binge drinking, had far more hangovers than he would like and witnessed his fair share of bar room brawls, our resident James Martin (sic) figured that he needed to see how well these guys really captured the essence of pure hedonism that they claim to have achieved.
