John Bedard that if you like symphonic metal at all and do not pick up a copy of this album your collection will be missing something vital. Indeed, he thinks this might be the best album he has heard this year, and it brought him to tears multiple times. It will be the new standard for him as to what is a perfect symphonic metal album, at least for the time being. He doesn’t not think anyone will be disappointed in what they hear here and reckons this is probably a fantastic album to convert new people to the genre – but at the same time lacks nothing that long-time fans will look for.

According to Google, ‘Omophagia’ is the act of eating raw flesh, usually within the context of occult rituals. It is linked particularly to the worship of Dionysus, the Greek God of fertility, religious ecstasy, ritual madness and, uh, theatre. So what’s the first thing we all think of when it comes to eating uncooked meat while worshipping such a figure? That’s right! Death metal. You can’t enjoy your interval ice cream without it.

The New Roses – ‘Nothing But Wild’ (Napalm)

Fourth albums are often an opportunity for bands not only to consolidate their existing sound but also to push the boundaries of what they have done before while not straying too far from their established path and alienating the fanbase they have worked so hard to establish. ‘Nothing But Wild’, the latest offering from ÜR’s favourite German party animals, The New Roses, achieves both of these objectives in damn fine – no, make that DAMN FINE – rock ‘n’ roll style.

Metal Mayhem V – St Helens, Tank – 27 July 2019

A new venue to our travelling gigaholic, Tank in St Helens, hosting a rock/metal all dayer for free seemed like a damn good way to start his Saturday off, before heading into his DJ residency. And with the likes of Witch Tripper and Deified appearing on the bill, it was a damn good line up! That in mind, he headed across on local transport to take in some heavy riffs. A small bar with a strong DIY ethic and spirit awaited him, along with a number of the bands already in good spirits.
