With a name like “Atomic Witch,” they’re bound to be a stoner or doom band right? WRONG STUPID! You might have prepped yourself for the first listen by sitting in a barn with a jug of cider, ready to bliss out to some slow and heady grooves, but how daft do you look when it opens with a rabid thrash riff? A riff so nasty it induces an involuntary burst of headbanging, cruelly interrupted when you crack your skull on a wheat thresher and accidentally alert the passing farmer to the trespassers on his land?

War Cloud – ‘State of Shock’ (Ripple Music)

According to our man John B, ‘State of Shock’ is deliciously old school. What War Cloud has made here would fit right in with the music we know and love from the 80s. There are elements here that call back to Deep Purple or AC/DC among many others from the era, but War Cloud manages to be very much their own thing instead of feeling like another band simply trying to copy what worked for others before. JB believes that, these days, it is hard to be your own thing while following in the footsteps of the greats, but War Cloud manage it here and it is good to see.
