Some of you may be surprised to hear that the late great Lemmy had set up his own record label, Motörhead Music, in order to help up and coming bands break through into the big leagues. One such band on the label was handpicked by the man himself, which must mean there’s something particularly special there. That band is Budderside, who released their debut album on Motörhead Music in 2016 but are back at it again with their sophomore release. Not being one to question the judgement of one of the undeniable Gods of the metal scene, Jonny B was left with no option but to dive in and embrace the ‘Spiritual Violence’.

Back in the mid-80s, before the internet, downloads, streaming etc, one of the best ways to discover new bands was the good old compilation album. When it came to the thrash/speed metal explosion of that era, the first port of call was the excellent ‘Speed Kills’ series that Music For Nations/Under One Flag put out. In 1986 ‘Speed Kills II:The Mayhem Continues’ got off to a blistering start with Agent Steel’s ‘The Calling/Agents Of Steel’ sitting pride of place at Side One Track One. It became an instant classic, but the band only lasted two albums and one EP before disbanding in 1988. Now original vocalist and founding member John Cyriis returns with a brand new line up for his first Agent Steel album in 34 years – ‘No Other Godz Before Me’.

Although Disstraxx emerged from the ether only a year ago, this DIY band actually rose from the ashes of seven-year horror/synth punk project Autopsy Boys. Their bassist, Gary Hargreaves was of hardcore punks The Plight. Having immersed themselves as a band in the ÜK underground punk scene and having embraced a culture of antisocial behaviour, in the end in the words of singer Lee (Brönskibeat) Brunskjill Autopsy Boys imploded because ‘‘the absolute chaos… and internal stuff eventually caught up with us’’. So, they took some time, sorted themselves out, worked their regular jobs and waited until they had something important to say.

Well, 2021 has finally taken its reasonably confident steps to the end of its third month, with the dawning of British Summer Time seeming to finally shine some light at the end of the tunnel for what otherwise has been pretty much of another shitstorm of a year, with the vaccination programme finally starting to take effect and BoJo’s much-vaunted “roadmap” out of the crisis finally having some form of, albeit loose, timetable. Of course, it comes too late for the first half of the festival season, with both Download and Glastonbury already shelved for the second successive year, and it remains to be seen if there will be any longer lasting restrictions on live events, either indoors or outdoors, especially in terms of the possible need for “vaccination passports”… But those are discussions for other places…
