For many years, the EP – or ‘Extended Player’, to give it its full title – was a criminally overlooked format. But, in recent years, it has made something of a deserved comeback, as bands face the challenge of continually producing new material but often not being able to commit to the cost of, or time to, recording full-length albums. It’s a format which Über Rock has long championed: hell, we have a ‘Top Five EPs’ category in our annual end-of-year writers’ poll – but, as a busy website, it is often difficult to justify devoting space to the more miniature format. So, in the return of our occasional feature – and what will probably (with our reputation) be an irregular one – Monk gave a listen to some of the EPs that have crossed his editor’s desk in recent weeks…

Ivar Bjørnson & Einar Selvik – ‘Skuggsjá’ (By Norse Music)

In Norway in 800 AD, at the fields of Romerrike the tribes of free men called Raumene reigned. They fought and gave blot and hails to Odin the rageful and held their Council at Eidsiva. Here they met to divide the land, appoint their rulers and judge those who opposed the laws. Eidsivating still exists as a court today and the historic place of Eidsvoll, where 112 men met and wrote the Norwegian Constitution in 1814, it got its name from Eidsiva. Eidsvoll still has traces of settlements and Viking graves after the tribes of Raumene.

Having lived in The States for nearly four years, there were understandably some parts of British culture that our occasional guest contributor Baz Francis missed out there, and above even being able to get hold of decent tea bags and cheaply available Marmite, the thing that he missed the most was getting to see the Manic Street Preachers play live.
