Aversed – ‘Impermanent’ (Self-Released)

Although they have been kicking around the death metal scene in their native New England for slightly more than a decade, Aversed have not exactly been prolific, not least on the recording front; indeed, they seem to have a knack of releasing new material on a five-year cycle, having regaled us with two EPs, in 2011 and 2016 respectively, before now presenting us with this, their debut full-length offering. Now, you can’t really blame the band members for the delays between releases, as they’ve not exactly been sitting on their arses in the interim periods, instead keeping busy with other projects (the most notable being fellow melodic death dealers Allegaeon and Unflesh).

Tides Of Kharon – ‘Titanomachy’ EP (Sliptrick Records)

In the view of our JB, there is something special about melodic death metal. It is one of those genres that really allows the artist’s passion to come through. What else can we really do? So, it is quite appropriate that this is exactly the course of action which Swedish garage rockers Grande Royale expound in the title of this, their fiery fifth album…

Grand Celestial Nightmare – ‘Forbidden Knowledge and Ancient Wisdom’ (New Era Productions)

Formed in 2016 by Maurice De Jong of Gnaw Their Tongues, Grand Celestial Nightmare began as an outlet for symphonic black metal taking inspiration from Greek artists of the genre. Now, five years on from the release of debut album, ‘The Void of Death’, De Jong has reignited the creative fires of Grand Celestial Nightmare. This eight-track follow up ‘Forbidden Knowledge and Ancient Wisdom’, still holds true to the original Hellenic black metal concept, however, there is also the blending in of more traditional heavy metal too. The aim is to create a blend that can encapsulate more of the genre and mix more melodic leanings into the rawness of black metal.
