Tarja – ‘From Spirits And Ghosts (Score For A Dark Christmas) 2020 Reissue’ (earMUSIC)

In the interest of full disclosure, there are a couple of things you should be aware of. First, as a rule, John B doesn’t like Christmas music. He finds that there are too few songs and everyone that sings them tends to not get very creative and makes it sound too much like everyone else who has sung it before. Second, he absolutely loves Tarja. His love for metal started with her while she was still singing with Nightwish. So, JB will admit that he has two very strong biases that come into play here. While he knows this is a reissue this is his first time hearing it as, like he said before, he doesn’t like Christmas music. So that all being said what did he think?

Dropdead – ‘Dropdead’ (Armageddon)

It’s a big year for fans of Rhode Island based phenomenon Dropdead. Having just released their epic ‘23 Songs in 24 Minutes’ third album last month, they have also been busy upgrading the sound quality and artwork of their first two LPs. Slow Fall – ‘Beneath The Endless Rains’ (Inverse Music)

Few phrases get John B more excited than “melodic death metal”. As a genre, it hits so many points that he loves so much. There is inherently so much power in the genre and these big transitions that just can’t be beaten. There is so much emotion tied up in it and so much careful crafting that must be done to guide that emotion into what the artist is trying to make you feel. As a genre, our man in Kentucky thinks melodic death metal is uniquely capable of this more than any other genre. It is also the genre that he’s the pickiest about if he feels the bands don’t deliver. So, the question is, do Slow Fall deliver with ‘Beneath The Endless Rains’?
