Kiwi Jr – ‘Chopper’ (Sub Pop)

A year ago, Jonny Btook a chance on an album that was pretty far outside of his usual listening sphere and found himself pleasantly surprised by the outcome. The album in question was the sophomore release from Canadian alt-rockers Kiwi Jr who somehow managed to mash together ’60s vibes with the sound of the ’00s indie scene. Well, recently his inbox was graced with the follow up to that album, as this band clearly wastes no time, so it was only fitting that he delve in and give this one a go too!

Ferocious Dog/Johnny Hash – Belfast, Voodoo – 21 August 2022

This was the fourth gig in three days which had seen Belfast temporarily transformed into the impromptu punk capital of the Über Kingdom, with both local heroes Stiff Little Fingers and ’77 scene veterans U.K. Subs having staged sold-out shows (on entirely different scales, it has to be said) the previous evening, with the likes of the rival XSLF, beat generators The Selector, the transformed Undertones, local legends The Outcasts and the insanely talented Ricky Warwick and his current band of Fighting Hearts thrown into the mix over the course of the weekend.

Sowulo – ‘Wurdiz’ (By Norse Music)

U.K. Subs/The Outcasts/Buck Eejit – Belfast, Voodoo – 20 August 2022

Monk’s home town was hosting a sort of “punk rock weekender”, with four gigs over the space of three days. XSLF had played this very same venue the previous evening, and Ferocious Dog were due to do the same the following night. But, despite the counter-attraction of local legends Stiff Little Fingers and The Undertones playing just ten minutes walk down the street, this evening was all about one band, and one man in particular. Yes, Charlie Harper and an impromptu incarnation of the U.K. Subs (we’ll come to that in a bit) were back in town for the sold-out second and final night of what had been billed as their “last ever Irish tour”…
