Curated by DJ Astrocreep
It’s DJ Astrocreep back on the decks of doom, bringing you some more quality music to get you through the hard times ahead. Monk is back on the virtual bar (as regular barkeep Kevin is in self-inflicted isolation with a massive hangover) to serve you up some cold, refreshing tracks to keep you cool…
My first pick for today is actually a recommendation from one of our contributors, Jonny Bakes, with Swedish heavy blues rockers Primal Instinct‘s latest effort, ‘Crossroads’. An intriguing, well-crafted track that comes across equal parts smooth and riffy:
It’s clear I needed to use my Sensible Gray Cells a bit more when ‘I Married A Monster’, especially when this well crafted power pop would have been a much better choice, with its melodies and hooky guitars!
Time for a debut single, with melodic hard rock act HeadFury and ‘Monterrey’ showing a songwriting togetherness of band that have been together a great deal longer. Soulful vocals accompanied by a heavy rocking track bodes well for the future of this act.
Some heavily synthisized psychedelic rock now with CNJR ‘Burning’ to show us what they can do. A laid back affair with a dark 70s psych that wouldn’t sound out of place on the Flash Gordon soundtrack!
‘Stevie K’ is something quite different, with Adulkt Life creating a dirty, scuzzy electronic punk number that is going to really push the likes of Idles some distance in the very near future!
Russian post-rockers I Am Waiting For You Last Summer have created something with a delicate beauty in ‘Je Me Demande’, with a soft vibrance ceding way to a melodic, anthem post-rock towards the end of a mesmerising track.
Some progressive doom now as Uncle Woe show off the first single from their sophomore album in ‘Become The Ghost’. Sounding like a raw, dystopian, fuzzed out soundtrack to an apocalypse is kind of fitting right now!
Carcass are still walking down ‘The Long and Winding Bier Road’ with their latest single, the extreme metal legends producing another corker with this melodic take on their heavy sounds.
Lets have us some more punk now, as Aussie upstarts A.Swayze & The Ghosts set their ‘Evil Eyes’ on music domination with this sing along anthem sure to get as much under your skin as much as it has mine!
Canadian punk ‘n’ rollers King Bull want to see your ‘B-Side Baby’ in their newest release, with a track that oozes class, passion and musical ability to perfection.
Blues rockers Black Stone Cherry have been around for a while with good reason, as this soul-killed southern rock single will show when it’s still ‘Ringin’ In My Head’ for a good while yet – it’ll probably earworm into yours too!
Brooding Swiss rockers The Beauty of Gemina combine Nick Cave style vocals with a musical approach that borders on melodic alt-rock and post-punk to create a rather enthralling new song in ‘A Night Like This’:
Time to slow it down a bit now with some soulsy blues from Walter Trout and his ‘Ordinary Madness’ in a more modern take on that old Mississippi style in a rather mesmerizing fashion.
Gazpacho have created another thing of equal parts sumptuous vocals with an off kilter, uplifting heavy prog rock song with the title track ‘Fireworker’ from their just released album. Plenty of melodic hooks combine for another well worked effort from the talented act.
Melodic post hardcore upstarts As Everything Unfolds have a hint of a few things they seem to be ‘Hiding From Myself’ – namely a mix of djent, melody, post-hardcore and an ability of mix into this their softer attributes alongside their more in your face attitude with enthusiastic, dynamo energy in this latest track!
Chaos E.T. Sexual seem to have done something quite different with ‘1674 – Now: Many Thousand Gone’ – they’ve made dissonant melodies sound equal parts jarring and alluring! Industrial post-noise to weak your knees weak while both chilling out your mind and letting the demons into the frayed edges.
From that chaos to Blackpool (?), Octopus Montage mix a classic pop-punk sound with metalcore in a manner that comes across far better than it may first seem in debut single ‘Grow Up’. Lots of melody, a surprisingly good edge to their heavier side
Our penultimate track sees us take in the aural delights of Swedish symphonic metallers Tungsten, showing their metal sound (sorry, not sorry) in the manner that compatriots Sabaton do so well. Plenty of melody and riffs make for a compelling, likeable song.
Finally for something slightly different, as we have a teaser of a single being released in a couple of days by West Midlands act Slump, with ‘Nothing More’ being a veritable Sabbath fest in its approach to heavy blues rock, boding well for the obviously talented act.
Well, that’s your lot for this iteration of the Singles Club. Yet again, we’ve drunk the pumps dry and the optics are running low, so it’s time to neck the dregs and feck off to enjoy what’s left of this Sunday afternoon sunshine. We hope you agree that it has been another eclectic collection, and that you found something to tickle your earbuds and drive you to explore some new musical horizons. Until next time, when the boss man will be back behind the death decks, keep ‘er lit, keep ‘er between the hedges and #StayTheFuckSafe!
