For the past decade, this collaboration between Meads Of Asphodel frontman Metatron and guitarist James Marinos have been reinterpreting and reimaging ancient Britannic folklore via the mien of folk-infused melodic death metal, most effectively in the form of their stunning fourth album, the ÜR-approved ‘Y Gododdin’, released at the end of last year and from which this, one of the exemplar tracks, has now received a well-deserved stand alone release.
‘The Shining Company’ sees the Wolves continue their ride with the northern Gododdin in their fateful the battle of Catraeth, one of the last conflicts of resistance against the Germanic settlers who massacred the Celtic peoples of what was to become England. Somewhat aptly, in the current circumstances, it also sees the duo collaborate with Thurios of Ukrainian black metal horde Drudkh, as well as Nico Millar from Aklash. The accompanying video combines the usual mix of live performance and dramatic reenactment, in a way which really draws out the dark melodic atmospheric of the track:
