Chosen by The Dark Queen. Commentary by Monk
It’s hard to believe that it’s been seven whole days since we last awarded our coveted ‘Video Of The Week’ title, and a lot has happened in the Überverse, with many parts of the Über Kingdom once again being lockdown with the most severe of restrictions and everything that these bring with them, including yet more cancelled live shows (including livestreams) and Christmas arguably ruined for many people.
With all of that in mind, we thought we should shine a bit of rock ‘n’ roll joy, and bring a little much-needed levity into this otherwise dank and dreary world for our last ‘VOTW’ selection (next week will feature our selection of our favourite clips we have featured over the past 12 months)… So, when this little offering splash landed into the inbox at ÜRHQ, it was the obvious choice to do just that.
Now, it could be argued that ‘Prom Night’ has been released at the wrong time of year, and would have been eminently more suited for a Halloween slot rather than one right on the cusp of Christmas… but, this is symptomatic of the problems many, many bands have faced in battling against the often inane implementations of renewed lockdowns over the course of the past 38 weeks… and it should have been pantomime season anyway, so who gives a flying one about the pedantics of timing?
This video’s origins actually can be traced back to before the beerbug era, when SLUTS vocalist Mike Van D and the video’s creator, Wayne Donaldson, sat down to discuss plans and ideas. Of course, when the process started they were, to use their own words, “unaware of how long it would take to bring this idea to life due to an unforeseeable plague… but now, nearly a year later, the video is live in all it’s cheesy, daft, ridiculous glory”.
And cheesy is a more than apt description for this brilliant slice of horror B-movie inspired silliness, featuring a mix of live band performances, some stupendously daft “acting” on behalf of both the band members and “prom queen” Melissa Lawless and green-screen animations. The result has more cheddar than a warehouse full of Cathedral City, and once again proves that our favourite shock rock goffs are, indeed, madder than a bag of badgers… Which leaves us to say nothing more than grab a glass of vino, maximize the screen, turn up the volume and sit back and prepare for some very sore ribs at the end of this Satanic sleighride:
Well, there you go. That’s our final ‘Video Of The Week’ winner for this traumatic year… We hope you enjoyed some of the clips we’ve brought your way, and hopefully discovered some cool new sounds along the way. As I said above, next week will see us selecting our personal favourites from 2020, so, until then, #HappyChristmas and #StayTheFuckSafe…
