We’re two months into the current rock ‘n’ roll year, and we continue to receive a veritable tsunami of video clips – almost 140 of them in the past week alone – being sent our way in a bid to be the latest recipient of the coveted title and virtual gong of being named our favourite… not the best, we stress, but our favourite…
Believe me, we do watch all of the submissions, and, apart from those which don’t meet our criteria – i.e., no lyric videos, no straight performance clips and no “playthroughs” – most of them are of an extremely high quality, but there can only ever be one winner… And, to that end, this week’s selection is one that immediately grabbed me by the proverbial, gave me a good shaking and sucked me deep into its mystical world.
It is the beautifully surreal clip for ‘The Abysmal Eye’, the lead single from the long-awaited new album by Swedish progressive metal titans Meshuggah. ‘Immutable’ itself lands on 1 April, but if this opening salvo is anything by which to judge then it is not hard to hear why it already stands to be one of the most anticipated releases of 2022.
This masterful, mesmerizing clip, combining computerized images with real-life action clips, draws out the claustrophobic yet redemptive quality of the song to superb effect – but, we warned, it contains some rapidly flashing images:
