Our latest audio-visual feast comes from a band who, over the course of the past 20 years, have consistently proven that classical music and metal can co-exist in raucous harmony like no other forms or genres, and continue to do so as they return to their roots with their latest album, which once again sees them re-imagining the Metallica back catalogue in their own unique style.
Following on from their collaboration with the band’s own Rob Trujillo, the Finnish string trio have now offered up their interpretation of one of the deeper cuts from ‘Tallica’s discography, the hugely under-rated (IMO) ‘The Unforgiven II’, the second single to emerge from their forthcoming ninth studio album.
Lead cellist PerttuKivilaakso told us a bit more about the album, the appropriately titled ‘Apocalyptica Plays Metallica Vol. 2’, and the choice of the latest single:
We wanted to balance what we were doing between old and new. ‘The Unforgiven II’ has such beautiful melodies and the lyrics are great, too! I loved the fact that we’ve been able to bind this record and our first record together in this way.
We’ve been talking about making another Metallica album for around 20 years, as there were still so many great songs we wanted to play! We waited for the perfect moment to do it. Thinking of that teenage me who is now getting to play his favourite tracks gives me goosebumps!
Eicca Toppinen added:
It’s the coolest thing. We didn’t push – it was offered. We played the first album live and it was so much more fun and exciting than we expected, so we got the idea to do something like the first album, but we couldn’t do it in exactly the same way – we needed to challenge ourselves and bring a totally new perspective to the original energy and emotion of Metallica.
- ‘Apocalyptica Plays Metallica Vol. 2‘ will be released on 7 June.
