Curated by Monk
If you’re daft enough to poke your head outside, you won’t think we’re hurling ourselves headlong towards the turning point of the year, the Summer Solstice. It’s colder than freakin’ February out there, for feck sake! But, fear nought loyal members of the Über Rock massive, as we have plenty of the hottest tunes around to warm even the coldest, darkest recesses of your rock ‘n’f’n’ roll souls… so, pull up a bar stool, pour yourself a stiff one and we’ll set the death decks a spinning…
thrown ‘look at me’ (Arising Empire)
We kick off this edition is heavyweight style with these Swedish bruisers demanding our attention with the latest taster of their forthcoming debut album, ‘Excessive Guilt‘, being released at the end of August, following a run of festival dates which includes Jera On Air on 28 June and RADAR on 26 July.
Los Saints ‘Doctor’ (ENCI Records)
My next selection sees these Los Angeles alt-rockers seeking medical attention while delivering another dose of expressively dark self-analysis with the latest sample from their upcoming album, which will see them ‘Certified’ as ÜR-approved when it is released at the end of next month:
Chez Kane ‘Don’t Cry Wolf’ (Frontiers Music)
This classic power ballad marks the return of one of the most powerful female voices to have emerged from the Welsh valleys in recent years, and also a reunion with Crazy Lixx frontman Danny Rexon, who co-wrote and produced Kane’s declarative debut album back in 2021:
The Commoners ‘Shake You Off’ (Gypsy Soul Records)
These Canadian roots rockers ain’t gonna be shakin’ us off their rawkin’ trail anytime soon, as they once again deliver another slice of smooth suvern-inflected rock with this latest cut to be sliced from their imminent third studio album, ‘Restless‘, due this time next month:
BTK ‘Cadavres’ (Breathe Plastic Records/Dahlia Noir Records)
This serial killer obsessed French chaotic hardcore power trio (whose name expands to Bind Torture Kill) return with their first new music in six years, which will result in them once again unleashing their particular brand of ‘Sauvagerie’ later in the year:
Poppy ‘New Way Out’ (Sumerian Records)
Following her recent collaborations with Bad Omens and Knocked Loose, Poppy once again strides confidently out on her own with her latest genre-bending amalgam of hard rock, industrial dance and dynamic, expressive vocals on this strident declaration of self-confidence and growth:
UltraBomb ‘Rage Bomb’ (DC-Jam Records)
There is no doubting the pedigree of this supergroup which straddles both the original punk and post-punk eras, featuring as it does Greg Norton of Hüsker Dü and Finny McConnell of The Mahones alongside UK Subs legend Jamie Oliver, who are dropping the rage and ‘Dying To Smile‘ in the process, via their just-released second album together:
Bleed Again ‘Parasite’ (Self-Released)
This Brighton metalcore mob deliver with the precision of a surgeon’s scalpel as they accompany their headline appearance on Download’s District X community takeover stage this past Wednesday with this incisive slice of first new music since their storming 2021 debut album:
Nervous Eaters ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Your Heart Away’ (Wicked Cool Records)
Stevie Van Zandt’s self-curated label continue to produce some of the most wickedly cool (sic) records around, and this latest slice of bluesy rock retrospection from Boston these proto-punk veterans is yet another exemplar, as the band recall the heyday of their home city’s homegrown rock ‘n’ roll scene in this tribute to legendary venue ‘The Rat’ on the title track of their upcoming new album:
Coughin’ Vicars ‘Rips Of Rain’ (Venn Records)
Another rugged slice of ‘80s infused punk from the Scouse quintet, this new single is a nod to the local paranormal legend of the Bold Street ‘timeslip’ in Liverpool, and is situated in the rain-soaked drift home where all time and logic are lost, and transcendental navigation takes over. Oh, and it’s a great song, the perfect anthem for walking in a downpour with your hands deep in the pockets of your Sunday best, so nothing else needs said:
Chaser ‘Stay Gold’ (SBÄM Records)
This mid-tempo, ballad-style rock/punk ‘banger is a heartfelt tribute to a fallen friend, and features voice recordings and video clips taken from his phone shortly before his passing, adding to the emotional resonance of this latest taster from their imminent new album:
The Head Hunters ‘Hour x Hour’ (Self-Released)
This “new” band is made up of former members of Brian James’ band, as well as Brummie rock ‘n’ rollers Gunfire Dance and Noughties rockers King Adora prove that you can not only teach old dogs new tricks but that the old guard can still teach the young ‘uns more than a few tricks about how this stuff is done properly with this debut collaboration:
Ruff Majik ‘What A Time To Be A Knife’ (SOL Records)
These South African fuzz merchants are kicking the vibe back to a sepia-toned era where bell-bottoms and fuzzed-out bass were de rigeur, taking a well-known template and drenching it with their unique attitude and stoner-esque sensibilities with the lead single from their new album, due in September:
September Again ‘This Curse’ (Self-Released)
This French alt-rock quartet have been blending trip-hop, metal, post-rock and electronica to superb effect for the past decade, and are set to once again push their musical boundaries with a third album that will appeal as much to fans of Deftones and Incubus as it will those of Massive Attack…
The Early Novembers ‘We Hang On’ (Pure Noise Records)
We continue to mess with the musical calendar as this New York alt-rock duo prove that it may take only two to tango but in the process they can may a big, hugely impressive noise which is both infectious and sparky:
Tragedy Struck First ‘Forever Gone’ (Self-Released)
This latest single from the Kent-based metalcore combo shows that they won’t be going away anytime soon, especially with the release of their debut EP later in the year. If this taster is anything to go by, then it’s gonna be a ‘banger…
The Browning ‘Deceiver’ (FiXT)
Blending the explosive energy of metalcore with the dark, mechanical undertones of industrial and the raw emotion of deathcore, The Browning return to visceral, vivid action with this anthem for the disillusioned, a call to break free from deceit and manipulation, which comes complete with a Rammstein-influenced narrative section:
Bad Marilyn ‘We Will Rise’ (Self-Released)
We can’t let an edition of the #SinglesClub go by without a good old-fashioned dose of power metal to tousle our locks and get our aging neck muscles a-banging, so here it is, courtesy of these Swiss champions of the genre and their anthem to the importance of hard work and determination in achieving one’s dreams:
Health ‘Ashamed’ (Loma Vista Recordings)
We’ve featured quite a few collaborations in this iteration of the Club, and the final one sees these LA industrial metallers joining forces with Lauren Mayberry of Chvrches for a haunting reworking of this signature track from their recent ‘Rat Wars’ album, elevating the sweeping, electro-goth track to even greater emotional heights:
Storm Orchestra ‘Bright Soul’ (Mascot Records)
Our penultimate offering sees these Parisian brothers in rock combining old-school glam rock guitar histrionics with modern stadium rock sensibilities and alt-prog artiness into a soulful blend of Royal Blood-meets-Muse pomposity:
Ghosts Of Sunset ‘Hide Her Heart’ (Golden Robot Records)
It may have been a few years since the duo of John Merchant and Todd Long last graced the Club’s playlist, but they have returned in fine style to round out our latest playlist with this latest homage to the 1980s hard rock and hair metal that defined their youth, which they evoke with passion and panache on this latest cut from their current album:
