The Mentulls have just released their third album, ‘Recipe For Change’ via ProgBlues Music. This album has been four years in the making and like many artists, being on lockdown provided extra time to get creative and start recording. For these ÜK rockers, it’s the first to feature vocalist and multi-instrumentalist David Neil Crabtree, alongside founder members and brothers Andrew and Jamie Pipe who play guitar and keyboards respectively. If you’re a fan of melodic rock with a progressive twist, then you’re certainly in for a treat!
The album starts out with their hit single, ‘Easy To Walk Away’, which sets the tone for the musical journey we’re about to embark on. The album includes a group of songs that are based around the story of a person who yearns for the countryside and a simpler way of living, after becoming weary of everyday city life and all its pressures. I think that’s certainly something many of us can relate to. Title track, ‘Recipe For Change’, has everything you could want in a song. From driving percussion, silky smooth guitar solos, and passionate vocals peppered with catchy keyboard runs. It truly has it all.
The combination of well written songs and superb production make for a very strong album. ‘Learning Through Living’ is one of my favorite tracks on the album with its laid-back vibe paired with melodic solos and catchy lyrics. ‘Summit Fever’ has a nice 80’s prog rock vibe, while ‘Saviour’ also comes up big with its powerful chorus and catchy melodies. ‘Find a Way to This Journey’s End’ is instrumental only and The Mentulls were still able to paint the perfect picture for their story with an upbeat vibe that instantly had me hooked! ‘Smoke & Mirrors’ and ‘Worlds Made of Sound’ perfectly finish out the album leaving listeners in a positive headspace.
The Mentulls definitely knocked it out of the park with this album. ‘Recipe For Change’ is a big step forward for the band’s sound and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for them! Head over to their website to pick up a copy on CD or vinyl (signed and unsigned available) or download the album on any of your favorite streaming platforms.
