The Über Rock Singles Club Daily Pick – Bonnie Trash

To say that twin sisters Emmalia and Sarafina Bortolon-Vettor are fascinated, obsessed if not haunted by death, and are wrapped up in its darkly cold embrace, would perhaps be the singular biggest understatement of the year so far, as the latest album from this Canadian darkened shoegaze/post-punk drone project is all about the subject – not in the macabre, violent, or outrageous sense, but as you or I might know it: a spectre lurking around the corner, capricious, indiscriminate, unexpected, ordinary, and all the more terrifying for it.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK – ACID AGE

Right from the outset Monk has to state his business (sic) and admit that, having once dubbed them “one of the Titanic Trio of the three worst thrash bands on the island of Ireland”, this Belfast-based “war jazz” trio are one of those bands he loved to hate, and hated to love, but now loves to love – and this totally brilliant slice of audio-visual lunacy emphasizes his gradual change in affections for the beys.

Autarkh/Farer/Alkahest – Haarlem, Patronaat – 12 January 2025

One thing that’s pretty great about being in a social group where everyone takes their support of bands quite seriously is that there’s a never-ending stream of recommendations that get thrown your way and Autarkh was the latest of them for our man Jase W. As such he landed back in Haarlem for them heading up Patronaat’s Stage Three! Along for the ride were Farer and Alkhahest to round off an evening of noisy Dutch metal. ‘Motorcultor Festival Across Europe Tour’ – Tilburg, 013 Poppodium – 10 January 2025

So, 2025 is here and Jase W was wasting absolutely no time in getting back into the thick of things by hopping on a train to the other end of the Netherlands to Tilburg’s 013 for a pretty stacked show, featuring five bands, topped off with Infected Rain headlining on 013’s NEXT stage. People might have still been letting the dust settle from the holiday activities but this restless metalhead absolutely bloody wasn’t…

The Hornets ‘Another Place To Stay’ (Peones Records)

These Italian classic garage rockers don’t exactly display the same work ethic as the insect from which they take their name. It took them five long years to deliver their debut album (reviewed in these very pages back in July 2021). Back then, Monk defiantly declared that he was looking forward to hearing more from the Etruscan band: well, it’s just as well he didn’t hold his breath as it has taken them another three and a half years to get around to following it up…
