Riffology. The study of the riff. For students of this most masterful of subjects, tonight promised to be a masterclass, with guaranteed honours degrees awarded to all of those fit and able enough to survive this intense cramming session. So, Class of ’25, sharpen your pencils and pay close attention – especially you lot down the back – as the school bell has rung out very loudly and your presence is mandatory…

From the moment David O entered Hangar 18, it was clear this was no ordinary album launch. The venue, festooned with blue and yellow balloons twisted into the likeness of krakens, set a playful yet electric tone. Fans, many in King Kraken shirts, buzzed with anticipation, snapping photos of the elaborate decorations and chatting about the band’s growing reputation after high-profile festival appearances and a relentless ÜK touring schedule.

“All my life I’ve been waiting for you to bring a fairytale my way” could very well be the singular line that summarizes this first ever visit to ÜR’s home city by an artist seeking to make up for time lost by leaving us outside alone (sic) from her tour schedule for so long, with many of the audience having waited half or more of a lifetime for this night.

This rising Aussie songstress has been on our radar for quite a few years, having been taken under the wing of former Danger Danger mainman Paul Laine around the same time he invited our Dark Queen to live with him on his remote island in the middle of Lake Ontario. Unfortunately for him, DQ was about to marry Monk at the time so had to politely decline his very kind invitation, but fortunately the then 11-year old Cassidy forged a musical partnership that, a little over a decade later, has seen her blossom and emerge from her cocoon into a fully fledged and beautiful rock ‘n’ roll butterfly.

At the forefront of the anarchist punk movement of the 1980s, and picking up the baton as the leading lights from Crass when they dissolved in 1984, Conflict struck terror into the heart of the government and the police force at the time. Now they’re back with their first new album in over two decades, ‘This Much Remains’, and they still have plenty to say…
