Originally formed in 2006 and with two album releases in 2009 and 2011, the main protagonists decided that they had taken the band as far as they could, and busy lifestyles resulted in the split in 2013. However, it seems that the guitarist Pete Fry had an unscratchable itch that started a new era and with new members on vocals drums, rhythm and bass new music resulted in this offering recorded at the end of 2019 and into 2020.
Based in the commercial hard/soft rock genre of the late 80s and early 90s the music does not seem too retro. However, there is a feel and sound of REO Speedwagon in many of the offerings on the album. This may just be my ear listening to the vocals of Bob Malone, which are in a similar register to those of Kevin Cronin.
Despite this the music doesn’t feel dated, some of the lyrics are a bit twee and are not going to win any Pulitzer prizes, especially in the title track, but music only connects with audiences because it doesn’t take a lot of thought. Opening with a distorted guitar and drum on ‘Balance’ that sets the scene for the rest of the album. The rhythm section drives the songs well and there are similarities to many other solos from other bands, but the music holds up well. The harmonised twin guitars work well together and gives the sound a body that can be lacking on single guitar-based bands. There are some very nice classic guitar solos on the breakdowns in many of the tracks.
The album does not sound aged and there are nuances of many different influences from grunge to classic AOR and even the Queen style guitar opening on ‘I’ll Find The Way’. There is even a twin guitar opening on ‘Reaper’ which has a bit of Iron Maiden to it.
The mix is clear, and all the instrumentation is readily distinguishable, with all members are given their time in the limelight on the variety of tracks on the album. Never having come across the older stuff I can see me searching for it on Spotify just for comparison with the new line-up.
I enjoyed this album and I’m sure there are many more out there who will too.
