Back in 2020, I found myself getting caught up in the “hypa” when I took the plunge with, then, Eskimo Callboy’s ‘MMXX’. At the time, I distinctly remember it being an album that I almost hated but that I loved so it sat in my list of guilty pleasures for a good while. But eventually I dropped the guilty label and accepted the EP for what it was – a collection of absolute bangers! Since then, the band has changed their name to Electric Callboy, but I’m hoping that it is only the name that has changed as I’m pretty hungry for more of the same please!
You’ll probably recognize quite a few tracks on this album, if you’ve been following the progression of Electric Callboy. Pretty much half of the tracks on the album have been in circulation for a while; hell, the opening track has been around since 2021! What that does mean, though, is that Electric Callboy fans will have been working themselves into a frenzy for the release of ‘TEKKNO’. Would I include myself in that bracket? You’d better believe it! So I’m going to waste no time diving straight into ‘TEKKNO’.
I’m not the only one who isn’t wasting time though. The first few bars of the album are like being given a serious injection of party vibes with the raucous and catchy number that is ‘Pump It’. It’s a perfect example of the sound that had been honed with ‘Hypa Hypa’ by blending metalcore and electronic dance music so that you’ll find yourself switching from dancing and moshing over and over again! The melodic chorus provides a sheer contrast to the harsh vocals that immediately follow, and it’s one hell of a catchy chorus that is guaranteed to become a serious earworm! It’s pretty much a metalised version of that Eric Prydz song, you know, the one that every teenage boy couldn’t tear themselves away from the video (which Electric Callboy have emulated with their own video for this song) – and I’m totally here for it.
From this point on, the album is full of absolute banger after banger like ‘We Got the Moves’, ‘Fuckboi’ (feat. Conquer Divide) and ‘Spaceman’ which follow the opening track in a back to back series of incredible tunes (and also all ones that are already out there in the wild). The latter half of the album is composed of predominantly previously unheard material, so I thought about picking my favourite one of these to delve into a little deeper but, you know what, it’s just too difficult because they’re all strong in their own different ways! You’ll just have to listen to the album yourself to find out how Electric Callboy continues to make this bastard lovechild of every metalhead’s guilty pleasures sound fresh and exciting!
All in all ‘Tekkno’ is a masterpiece that is guaranteed to divide opinion. You’re either going to absolutely love it and dance around every room in the house listening to it, or you’re going to hate it because, simply, you hate fun. If you’re reading this and thinking “I don’t hate fun”, then get your preorder in, pre-save it on Spotify, or whatever you need to do, but just make sure you get your hands on ‘Tekkno’!
‘Tekkno’ is released on Friday (9 August). You can get your copy HERE.
