Demented New York punk rock rhythm and blues trio Daddy Long Legs return with more revved up raw, rough and ready twisted blues this month with new album ‘Street Sermons’, the band’s fourth, which is guaranteed to enhance their already fearsome reputation. And what’s more, there’s a couple of legendary special guests on this one too…
Whilst firmly based in the blues, ‘Street Sermons’ offers quite a variety of blues-based flavours across its twelve tracks, whether it be the up-tempo boogie blues of ‘Two Dollar Holler’ and ‘Harmonica Razor’, the traditional rock’n’roll of ‘Rockin My Boogie’, the Cramps-esque rockabilly of ‘Silver Satin’ or the lighter, acoustic feel of ‘Star’.
Opener ‘Street Sermon’ is a belting, ultra-catchy blues anthem with chain gang rhythms, ‘Stop What You’re Doin’ manages to meld the blues with a ’60s Phil Spector type feel, whilst ‘Nightmare’, which features punk legend Wreckless Eric, veers away from the blues in favour of a more catchy ’70s pop direction. And talking of ’70s flavours, a favourite for me is the harder rocking ‘Been A Fool Once’, which is a song that would sit quite comfortably on any Slade album from the first half of the 70’s. The more country flavoured ‘Ding-Ding Man’ sees Lovin’ Spoonful and Woodstock legend John Sebastian make a guest appearance too.
‘Street Sermons’ is packed with great, catchy, clever and punchy songs, boundless energy and some of the most outstanding, raw and raunchy harmonica work I’ve heard in a long time. A real feel good album.
- ‘Street Sermons’ is released on Friday (17 March).
