Lincoln lads Borders are a very underrated band, slowly emerging from the underground metalcore scene. ‘Purify’ will be their first full length album, after producing an EP, ‘Diagnosed’, back in 2017. Releasing on 10 May this year, ‘Purify’ is not just an album, but a powerful statement. These guys are fresh blood on the scene, one of which is not to be overlooked. Borders are here, and they are a force to be reckoned with. For fans of Hacktivist, Volumes and The Ghost Inside.
From beginning to end, the debut album is exceptional, with high levels of production, carnage vocals, intense riffs and teeth shattering breakdowns. Each and every track is diverse and unique in its own way, which adds a level of depth and complexity to the album, as well as keeping a distinct line between each song. However, this does not mean that the album as a whole becomes jittery, or disjoined. Instead, each track combines, to make an astonishing, aggressive coherent. ‘Purify’ is memorable, not just a one listen wonder. Not only will pre-established fans enjoy this newest release, but I’m convinced this will attract a mass attention to Borders. These guys understand the use of dynamics to create impactful moments.
Many of the songs on the album, including pre-released track ‘War’, seamlessly blend genres and styles to create a fierce, spine crushing experience. The combination of gnarly vocals, with rap style vocals, provides energy to songs. ‘War’ feels very Hacktivist-esque, with intense energy and catchy riffs. The merging of the two very opposite styles, allows this song in particular to stand out. There is no doubt that vocalist Jordan is highly talented, with a vast vocal range that he spits into every track.
Interestingly, it is noticeable that ‘Purify’ encodes an array of attitudes and ideologies about the state of the world/society we live in. From the track names alone, such as ‘Damage Everything’ and ‘Wake UP’, it can be noticed that the album projects messages towards political corruption and a bleak future for the system. It is brave of such a ‘small’ known band to make to make a bold statement like this; as it can limit progression in terms of being ‘liked’, however, Borders have executed it to a high standard.
Some may criticize the attitudes it conveys; however, I personally believe it will help to shape the way you look at the world around you. This high lyrical merit, enforced by nasty riffs and intense drums, fuels an anger in the listener. Providing this, live shows from here on will be chaos, an experience, do not miss your chance to see these guys.
‘Purify’ is bold. ‘Purify’ is a stab at the truth. The debut album is truly a work of art.
