Most of us in life know someone who is an expert in whatever their field is. Someone who knows what they are doing so well and can do it so effortlessly that they manage to make what is normal into something impressive. JOhn B has known mechanics that turn working on a car into an art form without meaning to just by being good at what they do. Listening to this EP, JB got that feeling. Everything is in order. Nothing is out of place and it all comes together expertly. Perfectly executed by absolute professionals.

It is no secret that John B loves power metal. It is big, it is epic, it is slightly cheesy, often motivational, and it has the best album artwork. ‘Psychosomatic’ delivers on all counts – except for tje cheesy and motivational bits! Honestly, this is probably the heaviest subject matter JB has heard in power metal in a long time, if not ever both in seriousness and sadness. There are no tales of Vikings or mythology or triumph. Instead, the subject matter of the whole album focuses on the pandemic and is quite dark about it. Admittedly this was a little bit of a negative for JB as when he realized he was reviewing power metal this week he was looking forward to a little escapism from the pandemic rather than to be steeped in it… but once he got past that he found what is a great album that does do well to capture what is going on in many of our minds these days…

Being of a certain age gives you the opportunity for a lifetime retrospective look at artists and music that may have passed you by when you were younger-Curved Air was one of those bands. During the period when these albums were released, David O was listening to glam rock (firstly because of the availability of it on the radio) then Radio Luxembourg brought me artists like Queen, before his older brother introduced him to the Old Grey Whistle Test and the advent of prog rock; however, by that time Curved Air had already gone through their genesis (sorry couldn’t resist the pun) to exodus and so they passed him by…until now…

“If Black Sabbath played Afrobeat” is a description of LA doomsters HLM’s sound which the band themselves admit is “convenient and generalised” and even “a little played out”. But they equally admit that this, their fourth album, is “perhaps the best rendering of the idea so far… particularly on the Sabbath side of the equation”. Having balanced both sides of that critical algebraic problem, it is hard to argue with either dimension, as the shadow of the doom originators does indeed loom large over the aural experience of ‘Ritual…’, while the album’s creators add enough of a twist to the original sonic experiment in a way in which so many Sabbath copycats have failed to do.
