BoJo The Clown may finally have published his much-vaunted “roadmap” towards post COVID pan(dem)ic “normality”, but at least as far as the music business is concerned, any sight of light at the end of the tunnel is still the faintest of glimmers in some far-off distant future, with more shows, tours and festivals continuing to be cancelled, postponed or rescheduled for what seems like the umpteenth time. Thus, the only “normality” which those of seeking our regular fix for live music continues to exist only in the virtual world of cyberspace, via livestreamed events such as this, the latest in a weekly series brought to us by the lovely people behind the wonderful New Wave of Classic Rock Facebook group, who have continued to fly the flag for the genre, in all its forms, with these showcases of some of the finest ÜK acts around… The formula is basically the same every week, with two bands performing a handful of songs, either in full electric format or stripped back to an acoustic alternative, with each set preceded by interviews with the acts concerned.

It is not all that often that John B gets to say this, but this is unlike anything he has ever heard before. Not really because any one aspect is totally unique, as he can hear where the roots and inspiration come from, but because he has never heard this combination of elements put together quite like this. He loves it when something takes him by surprise like this. It is refreshing. Unfortunately, he’s not going to say it is perfect. he does have some mild critiques but, overall, he feels it is one hell of a debut album…

We can largely all agree that the last year or so has been pretty bleak. Now for some of us, there is the whisper of a promising step of getting back to a ‘normal’ state of affairs and with winter certainly turning to spring there is a vague sense of uplift. However, Suffolk based five-piece Ghosts of Atlantis would like to introduce you to their brand of melodic led black metal. Incorporating elements that liken their sound to Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth, it’s safe to assume that these guys are not in the cheery sunshine business. That being said, there are some melodic high points contained within eight track debut, ‘3,6,2,4’. They’re just wrapped in a package of brooding macabre that goes along with hailing from the ÜKs Witch County.

Well, 2021 may have may have finally taken its first reasonably confident steps to the end of its second month, with some light seeming to finally appear at the end of the tunnel for what otherwise has been pretty much of another shitstorm of a year, with the vaccination programme finally starting to take effect and BoJo’s much-vaunted “roadmap” out of the crisis finally having some form of, albeit loose, timetable. Of course, it comes too late for the first half of the festival season, with Glastonbury already shelved for the second successive year and other events, such as Download, also facing the inevitability of further cancellations, while it remains to be seen if there will be any longer lasting restrictions on live events, either indoors or outdoors. With the path to our previous level of “normality” still a long way off, at least 2021 is sharing something more positive in common with 2020, in that it already has produced some terrific new music, with the promise of plenty more to come, if the inbox here at ÜRHQ is anything to go by…
