Bloody Hell – ‘The Bloodening’ (Rockshots Records)

Formed in 2000, four-piece Bloody Hell hail from Finland and have made a name for themselves in and around their home country. Despite having been around for some time, ‘The Bloodening’ represents only their second full length album. While their recording output could not be considered prolific, their numerous live shows have helped cement them as a hard hitting, party band with a strong fan base. Despite the career gaps, and the fact that they’ve all got slightly older from when they started, they’re set to introduce their version of heavy metal, have fun and raise some eyebrows at the same time.

Suzi Quatro – ‘The Devil In Me’ (Steamhammer/SPV)

OK, you lot down the back. Put your hands in the air. How many ÜR readers of a certain generation spent at least part of their pubescence doing the five-finger rag to the sight of Suzi Quatro in her skintight leather catsuits gyrating and jiving as she invited us to ‘Can The Can’ before taking us on that heady trip down ‘Devil Gate Drive’? Yeah, we thought so: we can see the guilty looks all the way from the mancave here at ÜRHQ… your mamma didn’t like her, but we all sure as hell did… Well, the good news is that, almost five decades later and with the lady herself approaching her 71st birthday, she shows no sign of changing her tune and stopping us reaching, if a little less nervously and self-consciously, for our nether regions in celebration…

Immerse – ‘The Weight That Holds Me Here’ (Self-Released)

To be honest, it’s not hard for bands to slip under the radar of sites such as ourselves, given the sheer volume of emails touting “the new sound of…/as approved by…” wannabes, all clamouring for our attention and precious few hundred words to be shared with our thousands of adoring and discerning readers (that’s you lot out there, in case you’re wondering). More often than not, such submissions disappear off into the ether from whence they came, never to darken our inboxes again. But, sometimes, you get a chance to make amends for an initial oversight, especially when a particularly passionate PR type goes over and above the call of duty and embraces you with their own genuine belief in the talent which they are pushing in your direction… which is how we first encountered Bristol melodic/post-hardcore propenents Immerse.

Aversed – ‘Impermanent’ (Self-Released)

Although they have been kicking around the death metal scene in their native New England for slightly more than a decade, Aversed have not exactly been prolific, not least on the recording front; indeed, they seem to have a knack of releasing new material on a five-year cycle, having regaled us with two EPs, in 2011 and 2016 respectively, before now presenting us with this, their debut full-length offering. Now, you can’t really blame the band members for the delays between releases, as they’ve not exactly been sitting on their arses in the interim periods, instead keeping busy with other projects (the most notable being fellow melodic death dealers Allegaeon and Unflesh).

Tides Of Kharon – ‘Titanomachy’ EP (Sliptrick Records)

In the view of our JB, there is something special about melodic death metal. It is one of those genres that really allows the artist’s passion to come through. So much energy is poured into every track that when a song is good it is hard not to get wrapped up in all that energy. It does not even matter if the subject matter of the lyrics is something with deep meaning or just silly stories the genre just lends itself so well to getting lost in the energy. Probably one of his favorite forms of musical escapism. For all this to be true though the music has to be good. So the real question is, is ‘Titanomachy’ good? Hell yeah, it is!
