VIDEO OF THE WEEK – TROLLFEST

Well, we may be only a few weeks into 2021 but already it is looking as if it as going be as much of a shitstorm of a year, if not more so, than its predecessor, with the Government apparently losing the war with the pan(dem)ic and fighting back with renewed, and even more stringent, lockdowns in place the length and breadth of the Über Kingdom (and beyond). But, with seemingly no light at the end of the tunnel, despite the promises of vaccines offering some form of over-vaunted “miracle cure”, at least 2021 is sharing something more positive in common with 2020, in that it already has produced some terrific new music, with the promise of plenty more to come, if the if the inbox here at ÜRHQ is anything to go by…

Farmer Dave & The Wizards Of The West – ‘Self-Titled’ (Big Potato Records)

As Monk sat down to spin this, the first new album in ten years from ‘Farmer’ Dave Scher, the mystical Californian songwriter best known for his work with acts such as All Night Radio, Beachwood Sparks, Kurt Vile and Skiffle Players (as well as our own Elvis Costello), the late afternoon sun was streaming through the rooftop window of the studio at ÜRHQ – and that is quite an apposite tincture to the day, as this self-titled debut from his latest project is an early indication that it will not be long before brighter, summer days come our way…

Dread Sovereign – ‘Alchemical Warfare’ (Metal Blade)

Alan Averill – or Nemtheanga, to give him his perhaps more recognizable stage name – bestrides the Irish death metal scene like a colossus, having been single-handedly responsible (especially in his own eyes) for placing the Emerald Isle’s contribution to the genre firmly and squarely in the centre of the global stage. He is also a man possessed of an ego as big as the Irish diaspora, not least in his derogatory attitude towards the Irish music media (which is perhaps surprising considering his own background as a journalist of some repute) … so, he won’t really give a flying fuck what we north of the border at ÜRHQ make of this, the third full-length offering from his doomier side project, will he (something he makes clear in the title of the closing track? Well, fuck him, ‘cos we’re gonna tell him, and you, anyway…
