Nekrogoblikon – ‘The Fundamental Slimes and Humours’ (Self-Released)

When a band that can be loosely bundled into the genre of “comedy metal” announces a new album for release on April 1st, you have to wonder whether it’s a joke. But for this band, the release date is no joke and neither is their commitment to their goblin mascot, John Goblikon, who appeared in the video that first brought them to my attention. It is, of course, Nekrogoblikon who will be hitting the Sophie stage for Thursday shenanigans at Bloodstock later this year, so that gives a good few months to get to grips with this latest offering in the form of ‘The Fundamental Slimes and Humours’.

Voltstorm – ‘Voltstorm’ (L.B.C. Records)

They say you should never a judge a book by its cover, but one glance at both their name and the cover artwork for this self-titled debut EP tells you all you need to know about what to expect: classic NWoBHM riffage, front and central. And that is exactly what you get. In fact, the only surprise is that, despite the name suggesting a Teutonic origin, they in fact hail from the leafy suburbs of London… But then, that’s a more appropriate geographic location, given what lurks within the grooves of this rather tasty little offering.

When you’re a band that has already made a name for yourself through epic Nordic anthems, how can you take things up a notch? Well, it seems like the thing to do is follow in the footsteps of Skálmöld and enhance the epic nature of the music with the help of a symphonic orchestra! Having had plenty of good things to say about that effort, Jonny B was more than happy to get involved when he heard that the Faroe Islands’ most famous metal export had taken the symphonic route for their new live album.
